Crates are mostly for doing while you have cooldowns with other missions(like in between vehicle sales).
You need to spend money to make it with crates and it requires a bit of effort to fill even the small warehouse by yourself.
They are worthwhile(except maybe the large warehouse).
I'll be on in a hour and you can add me to friends(same as steam name) and you can work for me(u won't have to do much) and you will make 100k every 20mins or so.
You can get a small crate warehouse (= 16 crate storage) for around 250 - 350k. This allows you to source ("buy") crates which you can then store in your warehouse. Is it worth it? Well... if you buy a single crate for 2k and store it then you'll be able to sell it for 8k. All it takes is investing 2k and doing a small mission to retrieve the crate. Missions vary but if you have a chopper it shouldn't take too long.
Crates get stored and the more crates you have the more value you'll gain. Sell several and you'll be making a nice profit.
Note that you can buy 1 crate for 2k, 2 crates for 8k and 3 crates for 18k. The more crates the harder the mission and more risky (if you're alone you may have to haul the crates to your warehouse one by one). You also get less direct profit, but your warehouse will fill up much faster which makes selling a collection of crates easier to achieve.
Selling... depending on the amount of crates you may risk having to deliver 2 vehicles, whcih can be a drag if you're solo (if you can drive then it's easily doable).
Worth it? I'd say yes. Because it's pretty easy to earn this investment back and get a good cashflow. If you really want to go for it then I would suggest trying to get 2 warehouses. Once you got a crate for the first you don't have to worry about any cooldowns and instead can get crates for the second.
Also interesting: special cargo. Items you can buy for a little more money and sell for a huge profit. Got a film reel which I bought for 19k and I could sell it for around 100k (a little less, forgot how much).
Right now I got a diamond which I bought for around 30k (a little less) which I can now sell for around 130k. That's 100k profit for collecting 1 crate!
Vehicle warehouse... costs you 1,5 million as minimum but yeah, it's a good way to make money.
When you source a high end car and bring it back in one piece then you can sell it right away in an easy mission that will bag you 40k. Little to no resistance from NPC's.
The trick though is to try and fill up your warehouse with low & midrange cars (10 low, 12 mid) after which only top range vehicles will spawn from there on. A top range car can also be sold for 70 - 100k, but then the missions will become a bit harder (you'll get attacked and you also have to collect the documents before you can deliver the car).
The more damage the car sustains the less payment you'll get.
Is it worth it... how good a driver are you? ;)
For crates I will say that I heavily use my Buzzard. It really helps me make crate sourcing a lot easier and I highly recommend getting one if you don't already.
Great post as usual ShelLuser, just to add to it
Its 80k(net) for top range specialist sell, 100k minus the 20k for upgrades and then whatever damage you sustain while delivering it.
NPC attackers won't spawn if there is another rival org/mc on session so its good to sell these when u have a friendly session going, you can turn it into a nice plesant drive.
What are the documents?
I got the free buzzard during the holidays, though, and at the time selling cargo gave you 1.5x the cash, which certainly helped.
That said, I think it's worth it even without those things.
As ShelLuser mentioned above, sometimes you'll get lucky and get special cargo, and these can sell for a lot.
To supplement your income between cargo runs, I'd suggest doing CEO/VIP work, especially Sightseer and Headhunter.
You can also play The Los Santos Connection solo if you're Rank 40, which is a rather profitable mission (~28k$). Just add a playlist: https://socialclub.rockstargames.com/job/gtav/6iGMM2yj2U2mYQCv8AMWqw
Sell your cargo when you have 8-9 crates, as this maximizes crate value while ensuring that you only have one vehicle to sell. If you sell more at a time, you may have to do multiple runs, which is a pain.
To sell more safely, here's a guide on how to get a private public session:

If you sell in a lobby with people, you'll get a 1% bonus per person (so a 30% bonus in a full lobby), but I'd argue that's not worth the risk of having to deal with griefers. Up to you if you're feeling lucky, though.
You might also want to consider getting a cheap motorcycle, as I find they're more convenient for getting around fast than a car, but that's down to personal preference. Just a suggestion.
