Hi,

I started my first playthrough but I feel like I have run into a kind of deadend. Hyperspace flight takes a lot of fuel and I have quite many quest items open. Yet I am not sure what to concentrate on or if I should just forget the missions for a while and try to make some RU to buy more fuel tanks and so on? Because fuel itself is also quite expensive. Please help. :)

No it is not expensive. You will be refuelled completely at your homebase and the discovered starbases and on other planets for 10 buck. That is cheap.
Don't buy fuel from merchant who offer X amount of fuel for X amount of RU, that is expensive and is not neccessary.
And you can get free fuel, yes FREE. When you are best frended the Thywom you can ask them to get fuel and they give you that for free. It is a conversation option (you ask them and you get the popup notification that you got refueled) not the ship-yard option (there you will have pay like everywhere else)
Later you can expand your fuel capacity (with said fuel tanks) but it is not realy needed.

Oh...oh! I didn't even realize refueling at Star Control was that cheap. I used to buy always with that "Fill me up" option for I think 10 points of fuel for 10 RU. Silly me.
