I used them to hold tank choke points while sniping. But, that's what they were for, anti tank mines / anti building / objectives.
claymore time isn't horribly bad. 5 min can last. but on some maps, easy to forget to put a new one. haha.

Initially the C4 was meant to destroy high HP structures by being placed directly on them.
It eventually works even if the C4 has no direct contact to the target. As for the vehicles, it is obviously also working but in comparison to those infrastructure targets, you can blow them up even if the C4 explodes a couple of meters from the target. This was used a lot by veterans to control chokepoints by placing C4 and then falling back, camping and waiting so that no enemy armored vehicle could enter the battle zone.
This is why we nerfed the time to live (which was 30s, so 15s less at some point).
