She does show emotion in my opinion, when she's interacting with her friend. I was actually curious if she's mute in the story.
I haven't been able to play more than a few minutes since it came out (been stuck at work getting them OT hours). I really liked the opening with Linda and Ira (was that her friend's name?) were goofing around outside the school. A great example of what Evil just said "emotion without voice acting".
In any event, I would prefer to keep Linda silent outside of combat 'grunts' or even cut-scenes. When I'm running around doing stuff and getting caught up in the atmosphere of a horror game nothing ruins that feeling faster than my character running his/her mouth.
I think it will be a good idea to hear Linda's voice in the end of the game. Like South Park - The Stick Of Truth. ^^
I don't think mute protagonists really click. You know, people know Gordon Freeman because he is mute and has no face and no legs. Not because we are attached to him. His famous because he is not there - no body, no voice, no back story. We can attach ourselves to characters, we can be a character, but we cannot substitute a character if there is none.
Name any horror game of the past - they always had strong protagonists, but you were them. You were that guy running through foggy town. There was a hole.
I think a speaking character is always stronger then a silent protagonist. All the Fatal Frame characters are talking. It help a lot to create emotional attachment to those. It wouldn't work in Fatal Frame 2 if Mio was mute and Mayu not.
Why ? I thin k it's unatural and feels weird.. Mass Effect was such a better immersive game with a talking Sheppard then relying on a silent protagonist.
I absolutely hate it when they speak in-game. Nothing breaks my immersion more than hearing my character go "Who's there?", "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!" and the like. If I'm projecting myself on to that character, the last thing I want to hear is my character randomly talking/shouting.
Since Linda's already mute at the very beginning (especially in demo version), makes her speak too much will completely destroy the atmosphere. If it's a movie, that's a different story.
