XCOM 2
Game Freezing During Alien Turn
I'm relatively early in the game, this is perhaps my sixth mission, and the objective is to subdue a VIP and take him into custody. "Freeze" is a misleading term, the game doesn't actually freeze. It just gets stuck in some kind of neverending loop when my turn ends and the alien turn begins. The red notice indicating alien movement appears, and there it stays. And it always happens after the VIP to be apprehended is identified. I've tried reloading, restarting, replaying the mission, switching the graphics, switching to a window, having different squad members take different actions, and simply waiting it out for about thirty minutes. No dice. Doubly frustrating because I've been paying my dues, building up stats and skills, and this is the first mission where my entire team isn't gravely wounded and out of commission for three weeks. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

EDIT

Found I can progress, IF I kill the VIP. If he is alive when my turn ends, the game progresses into the loop on the alien's turn. At least I'm noit stuck anymore, but the bug cheated me out of potential intel. Would still appreciate any suggestions.

Just bought this game - I had exactly the same problem. Couldn't progress once I spotted the VIP unless the VIP was killed, otherwise endless loop on the aliens' turn.

Encountered this as well. Was a capture/terminate VIP mission and also happened at the turn right after the VIP was brought into my squad's field of vision. Tried reloading that turn and a few turns before and doing things differently but it kept happening on that mission. Ended up loading the geoscape autosave right before the mission. Hasn't happened on any other missions since.

I had this once, too.

It was not possible to reproduce it but, as far as I remember, one specific alien caused the loop. Reloading last and previous save/s didn't helped. So I rushed to that alien and killed it in one turn. Since then I never encountered this bug.

I've seen this too...I think it happens when the character that "spots" the VIP actually shouldn't have. Like if they don't have a good line of sight to the VIP. I've also suspected that overwatch is causing it. The VIP will hunker down and it looks like they might be doing it in slow motion as if in a reaction shot scene...except without the reaction shot of course. I was able to reload and have it not happen a couple of times by not using overwatch with any character...I really I don't use that all any more. It seems the majority of reaction shots miss anyway. I started recording hits and misses and I was having a hit ratio in the 30% range. The Killzone skill seems to be a lot better for some reason though due it's cool down it had a much smaller sample size...so it might have been luck.

SOLUTION! This problem is still happening in 2020, but there is a solution. If you don't want to kill the VIP, you have to subdue the VIP on the same turn that your soldier spots the VIP. I had the exact same problem and finally was able to get passed the frozen screen by making sure that the soldier approaching the VIP had one more move to subdue the VIP before the turn ended. This saved my legendary ironman run and gave me the intel for the VIP capture.
Still having this bug in '25. Just shoot the bastard on the turn that you see him. Eff that guy anyway.
