As far as I'm concerned, a game that comes out exclusively on the Epic store doesn't come out at all.
That said Epic is offering developers a massive cut of the profits from sales so I can appreciate that for a developer its very hard to pass on such an offer being made. Epic are serious in taking a slice of the pie I just wish they'd hunted for games that had not already established their release window setup.
And I do not want to support them.
No matter how they could improve their platform in the meantime. If they want to possibly get my cash they need to stop ths exclusivity ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
If they platform will be able to compete with steam and they will have their prices batter then I may consider buying it.
Couse so far I just saw that they told Metro exodus sold more copies then last Metro on steam.
I take it as succes propaganda. No data presented. Nothing really marvelous about it couse metro builded good reputation and solid fanbase for years that passed since last release.
The point is for all the raging gamers do - in the end the Epic store is just another store front online. The take your money just the same and give you a game download just the same and the game works just the same as from Steam.
It's like when Origin launched, lots of rage ,but in the end most just moved on and got Origin and it didn't hurt them.
The main drama with Epic is the game "poaching" where they are taking games with pre-ordersa nd shifting them over to Epic for a 1 year exclusive deal. And lets be honest the only two ways to topple steam would be to either undersell heavily or have eclusive major titles and Epic has gone for the latter. AT the same time they are also offering developers a much bigger profit % from each sale so its very attractive to developers. That said one has to wonder if that means Steam and GOG and the other major store are over-charging or if Epic is undercharging now and might have to increase that % cut they take to maintain service quality. Then again Epic also draws income from the use of their game engine so that might tip the scales the other way (esp if they focus on Unreal engine games - where yes the developer takes a bigger % cut from sales, but they also have to pay for royalties for using the unreal engine too)
While different distribution platforms having exclusive 3rd party games does divide up where games are available it does not bring platform wars to PC. As PC users we are not locked into only accessing games via a single one of these platforms.
In fact some games going across all these platforms might be a bad thing if say the steam and epic games variant of a multiplayer game were not able to play together. That would divide the player base massively.
I do think that there is a danger in losing part of your game library of one of the platforms goes under. But you still have that worry if everything is on a single platform.
