XCOM 2
Oh come on! How was this a failed mission?
I just came from a raid on the assassins hideout, so my best soldiers are either tired or wounded.

One in-game day later, i get the guerrilla ops. One of them was to recover a serum toxicity report, and the report said "Very Difficult", but i pretty much had to do this one because it was tied to the Avatar breakthrough dark event. There were five pods total in the mission (on a relatively small map), 4 on the map and one dropping in. Red MECs, Mutons, Archons, Elite troopers, Purifiers, a Codex and one of those black robot swarm things (i forgot what they are called). I killed one pod no problem, but the next two were very close together and i triggered both of them, as if that was not bad enough already, the third pod drops in the middle of the battle by dropship. So i go into concealment with my Ranger, circle around, and get the toxicity report with just her. Then run back to my snipers, call in emergency evac and get my squad out of there. There was no way i could have tough off all those aliens at once without serious casualties.

So i get a mission failed and bad rating, even though i recovered the toxicity report just because i could not kill all the enemies on the map. This makes zero sense. By all accounts, that was a successful mission, we completed the objective and got all our soldiers out without casualties. Considering they seemingly have an infinite number of them, are those aliens that we did not kill really so important to the ADVENT?

Maybe those aliens know something we don't.
Even if you complete the objective in missions like those, you HAVE to clear the map of enemies. There are some mods that fix this however, like Phyrric Victories. Take a look for it in the workshop.
If you complete the objective and then evac without killing the remaining pods you stop the dark event but you dont get the mission rewards.
No aliens served on the table. They're livestock to the resistance and xcom. You don't see any cows or crops and farming in the game and there's no time when hunted by advent so we hunt them and eat aliens. We're starving. L.Shen could eat a muton and Tygan prefer advent burgers. The sectoids are for the commander and Bradford makes Bradwurst with what's left.
this one may also be helpful if it doesn't conflict with the one above. prevents regions from loosing contact with you just because you didn't want to attack a train you never asked them to de-rail.

I wasn't aware that the vanilla (and WOTC apparently) was still mired down by this lol. Another reason for me to parade LW2s superiority over it >:D
I second the Phyrric Victories mod ~ why should a mission fail because some brainless zombies are stuck somewhere

Because without the area being clear you can't pick the area apart for loot that constitutes the mission reward (either by itself or by trading it to someone who wants it).

Zombie in a sealed box making faint noises is so distracting to xcom
This sort of thing is legit what made my quit XCom 2. Being sneaky and completing the objective without once being detected still resulted in a failed mission. Thought it was really cool that I could solve missions in ways other than just straight up murdering everything, especially with them having implemented the stealth system.

But nope. Still had to murder everything. I remember just sitting back in my chair with exasperation after I extracted my dudes and I got a mission failed. Quit the game there and then.

Tried going back to it eventually but the enthusiasm to play had already gone and the pop-up whack-a-mole mini game when scanning the world was grinding.

Long War 2. You don't have failed missions just because you didn't kill anything. The only missions you can fail by not killing anything are missions where you WANT to kill everything (column ambushes, supply raids mostly).

Firstly, XCOM 2 is not a stealth game, concealment exists to allow you an advantage against the first group you meet and to allow you to advance rapidly at the start. Secondly, you still counter the dark event if you extract, you just don't get the reward afterwards because you didn't pick the place clean to get your loot.
