TEW is just the best horror game ever!
But you need a good rig!
If you have it, and can play TEW at glorious 1080p/60fps, you'll be shocked at how the game is good!
I think that all the technical issues this game had when it launched, killed it a bit...
If the game had been released in the state it is now, people would speak about it as an equal masterpiece as RE4.
For me it's even better because more variety.
And my god, art in this game is INCREDIBLE, every location, every mob, every monster are crazy good.
I'm sure in 5 years, we'll talk about TEW as a classic! for me it is, even more, in my top 5 ever and I game since MSX (bought in 1985).
Thoughts?

Better than "cold fear". Lol

My only nit pick is they didn't offer a toggle to turn off the vsync lock and heavy glare filter. Both are unoptimized, and one really washes out colors and masks texture detail and dark gradients.

The game itself is not unoptimized, just those two features that are hard coded.

I think there's a tip for washed colors, go into the game poperties via steam, then "choose launch option" and type this:
r_skipglare 1

A lot more colorful, but I prefer with the filter personally. It adds this strange athmosphere.

And to turn off v-sync, type this:
+r_swapinterval 0

I hope with these tips, your only nit pick is gone :P

^ I was already using both those commands, it's just that when you advocate them, especially skipglare, you get trolled on sometimes. Suffice it to say the devs should know better.

It is, what RE4-6 should have been. Hope they're working on sequel.

To the OP, Agreed I also think this game is awsome the detail is brill and the game is deffo intense, played on a system using an i7 4770,16gb ddr1886, R9 390X, plays the game max everything smooth as butter, playing through the game for a second time just as great as the first, as for the story I lost interest lol ..

The Evil Within is a good action horror game, but the best horror game ever? Silent Hill 2 hasn't been topped, and games like Amnesia, Fatal Frame 2, REmake also exist.

Now, Evil Within is definitely better than the reviews it got would generally indicate (technical issues aside), but there is much room for improvement, especially the main story.

It's pretty great so far (only about an hour, maybe 90 minutes in) but I wouldn't say it's very scary, let alone the "best horror game ever." Games like Silent Hill 2, Eternal Darkness and Fatal Frame 2 set the bar really high, after all.

Definitely a classic; I've just made it to the final chapter, and I'm having withdrawals already in dread of it being over... I don't want it to end! I think The Evil Within has pretty much ruined the Resident Evil series for me in that the story in TEW is so much more original with it's disorientation and delusions than the droll, overdone "zombie disease" story line of RE. I, too, am really hoping for a sequel, and I would rate The Evil Within right up there as one of my favorite horror-themed games, right along with Silent Hill 1 & 2... While the games are different enough that I don't feel a direct comparison would even make sense, I did enjoy the the stories and worlds of each equally.

honestly im finding the game crap and boring as hell....like SERIOUSLY boring....im at chapter 7 already and have just found that Shinji (RE creator who also made this) has basically just stole tons of stuff from other games and put it in this and then added more stuff from other series

Theres so much silent hill refs in this that its almost a joke
Theres so many RE4 prototype refs that its a joke
so many past re game mentions like the slow moving zombie head

It feels like a game which could be great but i cant help but just get bored out of my mind with it. I dunno if its maybe the paper thin characters (i mean seriously none of the cast have an actual personality) or if its just ive seen it all before but im finding it very hard to like this game. I can see why so many said it was a disapointment

Most of the neg reviews came on the PC version due to initial release condition. After the patching, most forum chat about it has been positive. Currently on Steam it garners a Mostly Positive overall rating, with Very Positive recent rating.

I also feel you're highly exaggerating that it copies other games too much. Many have said this of RE4, but it really only vaguely resembles RE in appearance. In gameplay, it is far different and much more challenging, and much more survival horror.

utter nonsense

this enter game is like the harry potter of books/movies and its enter plot/characters etc are just poor copies/rip-offs from far better horror games/movies.

the game was a massive let down not just on pc but consoles as well

Over 4 million units sold hardly adds up to "utter nonsense". If you don't like it, just don't play it, but you're not going to convince the millions of people whom thoroughly enjoyed it and want more that it's a trash, copy cat game.

If you can't see the stark differences between this and RE and other games, you must be blind. RE4 by comparison is practically Candy Land. It's chock full of trinkets you can scavenge to sell and buy your way out of boss fights. Not so in this game, it's a lot more challenging.

RE4 has more map variety and bigger environments, but the gameplay gets boring because it's too easy. And those so called horror gems that people rave about like Silent Hill are really just awkward in movement and very outdated in graphics.

There's nothing quite like The Evil Within, and it takes someone that's up for a real survival horror challenge to see it.

Not horror per say, but Evil here and this game are my 2 all time favorites.
