generally what most people do is they uncap it and then cap it with rivatuner or something similar to around 60fps
higher framerates "might" work, but they also might have some issues YMMV
Also, so if I understand what you're saying, the best experience on PC is to unlock the framerate entirely, and then cap it with software? Will I experience any issues doing this?
Setting the game to a framelock of 30 FPS results in a roughly 55 FPS lock.
Setting the game to a framelock of 60 FPS VSync results in what looks like an unlocked framerate (anywhere from like 83 FPS to over ~120 FPS).
This makes absolutely no sense.
The options are poorly named and idtech 5 is basically just using whatever options are exposed by windows as far as refresh, resolution, etc.
Console commands and their intended effects:
r_swapinterval -2 --> 30 FPS lock
r_swapinterval -1 --> 60 FPS lock
r_swapinterval 0 --> Unlocked/uncapped framerate
1. G-Sync --> On + r_swapinterval -1 (or -2): Game is locked to ~29 FPS regardless of the set framelock
2. G-Sync --> On + r_swapinterval 0: Framerate is unlocked, but has unbearable frame dips and terrible framepacing
3. G-Sync --> Off:
30 FPS (r_swapinterval -2): ~55 FPS lock
60 FPS VSync (r_swapinterval -1): Appears to be a ~83 FPS lock, but sometimes the framerate jumps up (anywhere from 84 FPS to past 120 FPS) and jumps back down to 83 FPS, causing weird side effects
TL;DR These developers are f****** monkeys; if, like me, you have a 165 Hz G-Sync monitor, I recommend turning off G-Sync and setting the in-game framelock to 30 FPS for the best gaming experience (hopefully).
I just set this up on my new rig running Windows 11.
I set up the following.
Set the game .exe (right click, properties) in the steam/common/game folder to be compatible with Windows 7.
I also checked the 2 boxes for DPI scaling fixes.
Launch parameters in Steam Application I set as:
+r_swapinterval 0
In Nvidea Control Panel, program settings, I added the game .exe and set max fps to 60. (You can select the value that suits you). If you turn this off, FPS will 100% load your GPU to the max FPS it is capable of.
I loaded the game and once I got past the black screen:
(Ctrl, alt, delete, then cancel, once or twice to get to the game menu, I set the resolution to my display native resolution).
For me this was 4k.
In game graphics menu fps, I set to 30 FPS.
This locked the game at 60 fps for me.
Oh I'm on a 2k Hyperx monitor that runs at 165hz. There are various games for some reason that synch me at 144. Most synch at 165 fps though. And then there's this game.
You need to cap it using a third-party tool like RTSS, see e.g. https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/The_Evil_Within#Stuttering.2Fmicro_stuttering_while_moving_around_or_during_camera_movement
