Also, let's not try to claim that his textures were anything spectacular. They were probably just AI upscales, and some of them were looking really bad or completely changed how an object looked.
If they're actually done both HQ textures and meshes for EVERY single thing, you'd get more people complaining about lag and can't run the game instead.
Nobody killed anything, all I did was ask that the creator of the mod disclose that it contains Special K. That's a requirement for the GPL and frankly, any legitimate software license.
It's not even about credit for anything, users need to know this beforehand... that the software's created by a third-party. Then when they come to me for support, they're less likely to behave as though I'm supposed to know WTF the random mod they're talking about is :)
----
That said, you can't put a restrictive license on the content you dumped using Special K. You, nor I, actually have said copyrights in the first place. ATLUS owns those assets, you're lucky they don't particularly care about you ripping them out, changing them and then redistributing something you don't own.
Don't stir the pot by claiming you own your work and somehow other people are not free to modify your work. They absolutely are, and anyone civil would mention the original author in anything modified from your work, which was modified from ATLUS's work.
----
Tl;Dr: This drama's stupid, kindly don't put a restrictive license on your mods, You dumped them using Special K. Everyone has as much right to modify them as you did.
I mentioned in the discord he should have just credited special k for being able to create the upscale. also, you forgot to put 1vierock in those last few paragraphs because im not the person who did the upscale nor do i know him personally in any way. in fact im aware of some of the dodgy things he has done with ps2/gc upscales so i can understand why some people may not like the guy. the upscales he has available on nexus though, i have no problem with obviously
I didn't forget anyone.
The last statement applies to anyone dumping assets out of a game using Special K and then applying a restrictive sub-license to content they don't have the copyrights to in the first place.
You don't have the rights to do that, you didn't even have the rights to dump the assets in the first place, but ATLUS lets that slide. They're not going to let slide paywalling or sub-licensing that content.
Like i mentioned before, he should have credited special k in a txt file and in game in some way. Also, im fully aware of his behaviour with paywalling, him doing that is some of the scummiest behaviour ive seen in the upscale scene like when he stole assets from Skies Of Arcadia then had the nerve to charge people for it, im not excusing him in any way. I've done dozens of dumps this year for lots of ps2 games that to this point have never had any type of upscale before and never once did i even ask for credit let alone payment (ie The Getaway 1 and 2, Sly 3, Hitman 2, Headhunter etc). The message was just a tad frustration since ive been dying for an upscale and its no more and i dont see anyone picking up the mantle for it. As far as im aware he wasn't paywalling, the mod was freely available for everyone on nexus. If he ever changed his mind and put it on his ko-fi site id be coming at him with pitchforks just like the rest of you but as long as its free for everyone, apart from the lack of credit which he shouldve done from the start, i dont see the issue with the mod
I guess i just found out about it and was disappointed. After thinking rationally about it and not knowing the full situation my stance has changed a fair bit. It isnt an excuse, but i also have autism so sometimes i struggle to put my thoughts into words properly without sounding contradictory or stupid. If i upset you or Kal i apologize it wasnt my intention.
