I realized I forgot something in the Vatican. Don´t want to make the main mission again now. But there is the possibility to travel to other places again. So how save is it to use that when beginning a new chapter?
That just bugs me to forgot some things.

Yeah the travel when you use the journal

Like others said by the journal and at the end of the game you also get ported back to the last freeplay part to finish all side activites and travel everywhere because in the last area is a big door? which requires most likely all artifacts.

So I can´t do it now when starting the new chapter? Only in the end?

Na you can do it when you want to do it. just make sure to have save before changing of level.

Yeah but then it makes no sense. I don´t want to loose progress. So I have to wait for the end for that.

The game saves at certain checkpoints. AFAIK you will have to walk around for a bit to hit a checkpoint (indicated by the hat-shaped 'saving' icon) to avoid losing recent progress.
