How to use the whip?

Im a newbie to these games. Can someone explain me how I use the whip and then swing in order to get to other platforms etc.? right now I`m at the confession fountain at the Vatican and try to get up without success. I`m desperate.

There is a small circle marking spots where you can attach the whip. When you move close enough, the circle changes to a button prompt indicating you can use the whip. If the icon doesn't change that means you are too far away. I don't think you can get up to the top of the fountain area from street level.

At the confession fountain there is a door on the left which you can open with a key. Then you can use the whip in order to get to the next floor. If you turn around you can see that there is another higher floor. Between both is a bar up in the air where you can again use the whip. If I use the whip I can only climb it up near the bar. I thought It should be possible to use the whip AND the force from the jump in order to swing and get to the next floor. Is that function possible?

For anyone on PC, you'll need to hold right mouse button and then W or S to ascend and descend the whip!

When you hold the right mb to climb up. Let go of right mb when you've reached desired height. Then simply push w or s to swing back and forth. Hope this helps.

The pro-tip is in using a combination of the keys: right mb+ w/s climbs up and down the whip. When you're half way and want to swing, let go of right mb and use w/s to swing.
For getting to the zeppelin swinging didn't help, there I had to jump at the farthest point using space.
Beware of using space while climbing, this will make you fall.
