Going back to previous areas later in the game

Is it possible later on in the game to go back to previous areas to wrap up mysteries/side quests etc.? For example, I'm under the Vatican and just about to solve the 5 lever puzzle and decided to go back to the first part and do "Find the secret in Castel Sant Angelo", which I could, great! But would it be possible to go back there when I get to, say, Cairo, or should I wrap up things (like finding all medicine for the sister in the Vatican etc.) before I get too far?

I do suggest doing the fieldwork missions as those kind of tie in with the main story, but everything can do be done anytime by revisiting previous areas.

Some of the side missions can't actually be done without you proceeding with the main story missions.

I've decided to hang around the Vatican and do as much as I can, I'm really enjoying it and it's turning out to be one of those games where I want to do as much as possible in an area then move on. As phily said, I get the feeling I'll have to progress the main story in order to come back and do some of the side missions that happen afterwards. Thanks :)

Just a Q folks. I remap forward to R and nothing is happening when I press R to return to previous maps. Tried remapping forward to another key and adding an alternative key to forward. Any ideas appreciated
