There's a weird durability assigned to each single-use melee item (which is either one-handed or two-handed) that means most levels consist of picking up an object, smacking a guard, tossing the broken or too weak item and repeating. Certain disguises have unique melee items that can be repaired, but this element is poorly explained in the game.
The hand to hand is okay, maybe a bit silly. But I'm sure it's intentional. Most of the combat leans into 'movie style' brawls. Once you figure out how to use Indy's whip, it's a total game-changer. It breaks large fights down into comedic set-ups and sight gags, as you disarm and yank enemies around with goofy flails and over-the-top sound effects.
The firearms are intentionally not much fun to use. You have a revolver/handgun (depending on disguise,) but it's inaccurate (in video game terms,) weak, and a major PITA to reload. You can pick up or snatch enemy weapons, but these can't be reloaded.
Shots fired almost always turn every NPC into an alerted, homing gunner with remarkable eyesight.
It wasn't until late game that I discovered you can use any gun as a melee weapon with the press of a button. Rifles become usable for effective knockouts or swinging wildly into groups...without alerting the rest of the map.
Overall, I have to say that combat is lower on the list in terms of what the game offers. It's there, but it's not particularly satisfying, often silly, and mostly discouraged by the game itself.
Whip can also "knock out" enemies if you aim for head"in stealth"
Weapons have book-upgrade to have more hit points but it takes a bit before you find it.
Thanks
