Not enough money in Vatican
The only thing I have left to do is buy the last book in the boxing ring, but I don't have enough money to afford it. I've got 530, but the book costs 720. I revisited every place countless times, gone through the sewers and catacombs, climbed roofs and towers, I've been in every room, tent and back of trucks and even revisited the castle from the beginning multiple times, but I just can't find any more money laying around.

Is it possible to go back to the tower where the air ship is attached to, maybe there is some more?

Did you hammer open the small Red Lock boxes? There's maybe 8 or so on that level at 100 per piece.

Man I hate modern gaming. All these pointless side activities and collectible huntings.

Do you want to play an actually good Indiana Jones game which is linear but focuses on the story adventure? Play Deadfall Adventure or The Strange brigade. Simple as a brick but have more exploration and mystery hunting and less "run around the city like a headless chicken.

Don't worry.
If you can't buy a book, the bookshop on the next level will have it included.
And you can always revisit any locations at any time and point in the game. Even after you've completed it ;)

small lockboxes, big chests, safes. plenty of money to find, i usually find myself with 3000 left over.

Thank you, this really did the trick! I encountered a few of them in sometimes strange places, but since they were never highlighted or there was never a message like "use weapon to open" or something, I assumed they were just random level objects...

Thank you for your comment, but the question was not "what do you think about the game design?".

Unfortunately, not in this case - the boxing ring books seem to be exclusive to the locations

White dot turns Red on all interactive stuff (unless it got a keypress-prompt)

The nice thing about this game is most that stuff really is optional. You can ignore it all and just play though the main quests/fieldwork.

Personally I really enjoyed all the side content in the Vatican (nearly 100%'d it), but then had had enough of it so ignored most of it for the next two open world areas.

yeah yeah yeah like always: "but that's just optional dude" Sorry no offense to you buddy but i'm sick of this argument. This is just as optional as having to use a car or public transport to get to your workplace is optional. Just walk. It is in reality not optional. Do you want to get the full gameplay experience for your money? Do you want to upgrade your character and see and enjoy how it plays with all upgrades? yes? Then it is not optional. This is the issue with games like this. Why do you need to upgrade your character in the 1st place. This isn't an RPG it is an adventure game.
But in generel the collectiblehunting is a bad game design. Only aiming for the FOMO factor of players that if you ignore them because they are optional, then you miss out on something.

It properly is optional though. Like I said I skipped a lot of 2nd and 3rd and didn't really feel like I was missing out. The game still took me 25 hours to complete so I more than got my monies worth (playing on GP but you know what I mean).

The game isn't difficult. You certainly don't need all the upgrades to complete it and tbh most of them are not that interesting, the ones I got anyway.

If you stick to the main path the game is like an Indy movie. If you do all the optional stuff it becomes more like a mini-series. Both are perfectly legitimate experiences.
