Most of the enemies that I've faced will respawn when you travel between maps OR when you go very far from a location, I think.

Not sure about the travel between maps, but finishing a side quest can trigger them to respawn in an area. For example (very minor spoiler) I was told to find an item in a specific tomb because the dig in that area was closed down. As soon as I picked up what I was sent for it triggered the enemy to respawn.

It does mitigate this by allowing you to get disguises so you can move around areas without triggering all guards, but these usually require you to reach certain points in the main quest to get them. Often you're better off progressing the main quest to that point, then going back to do the side quests.

I'm not either, but it really isn't problematic in this game.

They don't respawn if you don't want them to.

It's your own fault if you allow that to happen. You'll never need to be in an area for extreme lengths of time. It's a 50-hour game in its entirety for a completionist.

In other words, doing the obvious, like calling your boat to the dock will trigger a reload for the boat to appear. That means the map is reset and the enemies return.

If you don't do stupid stuff like that, the enemies will remain dead as long as you need to be in that location.

If you leave the location and return at a later date, they will return, but rarely will you need to return to the same location.

If you have all of the adventure books that you need, you can knock everything off in one trip. If you don't, at worst, you'll return one last time.

However, as said above, you get various disguises in this game. They help you avoid combat with enemies. As long as you avoid the generals you'll never need to fight because they are the only ones that can see through your disguise.

So, respawns in this game are never an issue like they are in other games.

Unless, like I said, you screw up yourself, get yourself killed, or call a boat.

I've been playing it like a stealth game too, and only knocking people out when I get caught and can't run away. I haven't even fired my revolver yet after several hours of gameplay.
I've never seen anybody respawn, but I have come back to an area where I knocked some guys out and their unconscious bodies weren't still there, but it also didn't seem like they were back on patrol either.
It kind of feels like unconscious enemies should be back if you return to an area after a while away ... but it also seems like the guards should be searching the whole town whoever is sneaking into restricted areas and knocking everyone out. Like, signs should be posted about "The Mad Concussor".

I take out officers in main street. Went to dig site, take out enemies there in about 15 minutes. I have return without any caution to main street and bum, officers are again wake up.
I would understand if some ingame time have passed, like I travel few hours away and then reutrn. But this is nonsense.
Coldhands Dec 27, 2024 @ 9:57am
^I mean, I would not expect the enemies to just leave officers unconscious in the middle of the main streets. That seems like the place where knocking somebody out would be most dangerous and least permanent.

Of course they are hidden from prying eyes. Yes, we can spend few hours in Vatican, but in game perspective it is still just few minutes, because there will have to be cycle of day and night.

I took out everyone on dig site and in palace. Hide all bodies. Went back to main street (with respawn officers), take key, went through sewer to locked part of castle and bum - everyone on dig site is back. No problem that I take out about 15 soldiers, no, they just return to teir work. And all my work (to have clean area which I used also in Dishonored and other stealth games) was for nothing.
