Eerie screams in the safe shallows
Every so often, I hear screams in the safe shallows that sound like miles away. The sounds terrify me and I want to know what they are. They sound like a woman screaming in distress or howling then echoes away. What is it?

I've heard another player mention that they heard roars from what is basically an end-game creature while in the shallows. In that case it would be a bug, unless you're hearing something entirely different. We can't be sure unless you posted a video with the noise occurring.

Probably the rabbit rays

could be Reefbacks, or Stalkers, if it sounds like its high pitched then it could the Stalker sounds, because the Safes are surrounded by CreepVine forests, they added a Stalker sound that plays every now and then even if there not near you, you hear like a distant screech

Is the noise often followed by the sound of an explosion?
Every one in a while you can hear, though not very often, a crashfish get set off. And they do scream before they boom.

If not, then it's likely over of the above options.

I was going to suggest a crashfish also. EEEEEEEEEEEEEE....BOOM!

Another stalker is having a bad day.

There isn't an explosion following the scream. Its not a crashfish.

Its too high pitched for a reefback

That's what the young reefbacks sound like. You can hear them talking back and forth if you swim with them for any time whatsoever. It's really very well done.

Yeah, I second the young reefback answer. Nothing else in the game sounds like that.

i looked it up and the possibilities could be a jellyray or rabbitray. Ive swam with a baby reefback before and it made the normal deep low pitched sound.

Yeah, that's a rabbit ray. Jellyrays don't spawn in the safe shallows. : )

There are some sounds that just play in the background and don't actually have an in-game source.

AFAIK the Rabbit Rays don't have their own vocalizations - I think that's just background audio to add atmosphere.
