This or the new No Mans Sky?
I am SUPER conflicted, both of the games seem similar but this one seems a bit more lively. The only thing that's got me more interested in NMS is the fact it's planetary exploration and not ocean only. So what do you guys say? Also are maps randomly generated?

They aren't similiar dude. Subnautica has a static game world (Doesn't get randomly generated) and is a proper survival game. You need to eat and drink and gather resources and tech to build better and better submersibles and bases (Yeah, you can build a underwater base)

I would pic Subnautica.

Do you want quantity or quality?

If you want quantity, NMS
For quality, Subnautica

If you buy Subnautica you will regret not getting NMS. If you buy NMS you will not regret not getting Subnautica.

Subnautica is a smaller, handcrafted, tighter and more focused experience. You can make your own tasks, explore the handcrafted world, or play the story and never look back.

The world is generally a huge but limited collection of setpieces put together and finding/exploring them is both optional and rewarding.

NMS is a larger, procedurally generated, unfocused sandbox experience. The story is just a footnote - you have to make your own 'tasklist' to really get the most out of it since each planet tends to be largely disposable.

The universe is a large collection of 'rng' event nodes that you can choose to participate in or not, but exploration is 'unlimited' depending on how much you like seeing random things stitched together in different configurations.

Subanuitca can be gindy but fun while doing so.
NMS is just pure grind
Subanutica has a staic map but can be fun to explore mulitple time
NMS has several billion planets, most of them are copy an paste with some random colour and creature.
Subanutica is dirt cheap for what you get.
NMS is currently on sale ( i think ) but at full price its AAA game money which is outrageous.
I call NMS the “Sit around waiting simluator” as thats what you’ll be doing for a lot of time.

Each game is its own experience. Neither is better than the other, though I will say Subnautica is FAR more polished. However, Subnautica's base building leaves much to be desired, while NMS's is actually pretty expansive and more free-form.

It all depends what you're looking for. Subnautica is overall a better game when it comes to story, polish, ESPECIALLY the UI and sense of awe, but NMS is a great game if you just want to explore a fictional universe with some lore scattered around here and there, along with a few "Oh sh*t" moments.

Just avoid NMS for its past.It was a trash game at release ,also had shady interviews with sean murray.I would recommend on not supporting those guys.

Yes. It WAS a trash game at release. Thank you for living in the past.

If you can forgive developers lying to you to sell thier game then go for it. I will not buy NMS if you paid me on principal. They lied about what the game was before release and it did not have anything they said it did.

Every platform that sold it allowed refunds due to the mass complaints about it not being what it was advertised as.

It may have got better with patches after release but it is principal with me, you lie to me about your product you lose me as a customer no matter how good you make it.

hands down subnautica for the sounds alone... 400m deep, nothing in sight and you here this clicking.... this growing clicking that turns into a scream, and then you scream and try not to cry... but cry alot...creepily beautiful and great story to go with it...

from what i hear, NMS is still kinda the same empty worlds, you can build a base and play with friends now which is nice but without some sort of story and everything being "same-ish" vaugely familiar, don't think its worth it tbh.

Probably the number one reason to get no man's sky is because of multiplayer. If that is a prerequisite for you than subnautica is not for you. It is not a prerequisite for me so I have over 750 hours in subnautica I have yet to buy no man's sky. I could point to the good in the bad based on what I've seen it videos streams but that would be basing my opinion on somebody else's gameplay. People keep comparing subnautica to Minecraft or no man's sky I can pretty much honest we say there is no comparison. The game is $25 and I guarantee you will get 30 hours of gameplay out of the first game. Most new players take about 30 to 35 hours to go through the game all the way. A lot of US veterans can do it in about 20 to 24 and yet every blueprint in that time frame. I can actually do it in a few hours if I wanted to but I don't desire to because the game is that much fun. I have yet to see a survival game of any kind it does not have a little bit of grinding to it hunting for resources or farming or whatever. Subnautica has actually made it fun most of the time especially early on to do that grinding because you're always looking over your back hoping that shadow you just saw isn't something trying to make you their lunch ;-). Welcome to subnautica!

Every game developer lies, some more, some less. It's just the business of game developing, to hype the ♥♥♥♥ out of your game if you're gonna stand a chance to sell and to continue to support your "baby".

At least here we have a developer who continues to develop it, most likely beyond what was promised, eventually. I think you have to be a pretty naive (or new to games) person to "buy" what was said for NMS before release, i personally avoided it like the plague because i could tell that it wouldnt be a complete experience. Bought it recently and having more fun than in any game for the past 4-5 years.. Looking forward to play Subnautica as well.

^This encapsulates it perfectly.

Subnautica's the kind of game that sucks you in and makes you feel like you're really living that life - it's able to do that because every inch of the map is lovingly hand-crafted and the story is written by a top-shelf writer for games.

NMS has incredible scope and depth, but the trade-off is apparent in terms of immersiveness and the quality of the writing. The whole "I woke up with amnesia and need to figure out what's going on" thing was trite back in grade school. For a high-profile game like NMS it's downright embarrassing IMHO.
