You cant finish subnautica without looking stuff up...
I love subnautica it is a great game and all but there is no way for you to find out how to get for example the stalkers tooth. They should atleast add a thing that when you click on an item it would tell you how to get it. Or how the hell am I suppoused to know that I need to find the sea emperor and where it is (I belive they dont mention him in the game I found out about him because of my friend). They should also tell you what you need to go to the aurora how am I suppoused to know I need a gravity gun to get in. They should tell you the items you will need. Also in the alien base (or whatever it is) when they scanned me I thought they infected me, because I didnt have the translator. They should make it obvious so you wont miss it.

Survival games in my opinion arent that kind of games where you need to look stuff up, you should be able to find it out by yourself wich in subnautica would take months.

Tell me what you think

I finished my first playthrough without looking anything up. I like that the game doesn't hold your hand too much. There are hints everywhere in the game, you just have to notice them. Scan things, read PDA, listen to audio logs you find, explore.

Maybe that's why my first playthrough lasted 35 hours LOL. Exploring everywhere looking for everything. as for stalkers teeth there is actually an entry in the PDA that tells you how to get them

I think you're a member of a generation of gamers that don't want to have to use their brains to play video games. I think you grew up playing games with big flashing arrows pointing the way forward every step of the way.

There's another type of game, one without big flashing arrows leading you around - this is one of them.

If a game that doesn't hold your hand all the way through isn't your cup of tea that's fine, but please don't try to ruin it for the rest of us by asking game designers to adapt to your desired style of play. Some of us enjoy a game that requires us to use our brains and gaming skills to overcome challenges.

In a survival situation there are no Participation Awards. You either win, or you die.

I choose to win;-)

I don't remember having trouble finding anything. I had this thing called something like scanner room that helped me to locate needful things. It even had a helpful name like "scanner room", suggesting it scanned for things so I wouldn't have to search everywhere for everything.

Now, it's been a while since my first playthrough, but I don't remember any difficulty in making it that first time.

I believe that you are just too lazy to look into your PDA to find stuff out by yourself. I just finished my first playthrough and I didn't look anything up. For the stalker teeth, there is a PDA entry at the first Degassi hideout you go to that tell you how to get them. As for the Alien Facilities you get a PDA entry from the gun facility (forgot the name) that tell you where they are. It's under codes and clues in your PDA. It tells you the location of the Alien Containment Facility and the Alien Thermal Facility. After you get to the Alien Thermal Facility you get another PDA entry that tells you exactly where the Primary Alien Containment Facility is (The Sea Emperor). You just have to actually be into the game and look into the PDA and try to figure things out for yourself. You can't just ignore the PDA's because you are trying to get through it quickly. Take your time and figure stuff out by yourself. I assure you that you do not have to search things up in order to complete the game. You just have to look, investigate, and explore. The game will not hold your hand throughout the whole story and guide you through it.

Could not have said it better.

This is an open world exploration game, not a corridor speedrun game. The more you explore the more you learn and the better it gets.

One of the very first things your PDA says to you is (paraphrased) "It is recommended you take some time to familiarise yourself with the information this PDA contains."

In other words: Read The Freaking Manual. That is literally what it is there for. It is an in-game wiki expressely there to collect information and keep you alive.

I grant you, some things are a little more obscure than others, and it is not always the easiest thing to work out a solution to every problem, but it is entirely possible. And remember - if you are genuinely having difficulty, take a step back, go and do something else, come back to it later, or POLITELY ask someone for advice (I emphasise politely because there is a noted habit, most usually seen online, of demands for help and whinging complaints).

I had to google the lava castle entrance because I couldn't see it. I also only knew how to get into the Aurora because of my previous experience (before you needed one). He has a point. There is a difference between needing to use your brain and needing a stroke of luck or outside knowledge to finish the game.

Can confirm; I didn't look anything up during my first playthrough. In fact I even went so far as to manually map everything out using range and triangulation in SketchUp because I somehow managed to forget about the compass addon (just... don't ask, LOL). FIND a way. Survive.

And to add, it made the second (and third) playthroughs that much better because then I started exploing places and items that I hadn't though of beofre after looking things up. Almost like two games in one. Sea Strider poop, anyone? :) Did... NOT expect that one, ha ha

Im just looking things up cause Im terrible lazy xD
But most stuff is mentioned somewhere in the PDA and after spoiling myself with the sea emperor, I wish I would have just played the game without googling stuff
kwong20287 Aug 21, 2018 @ 6:51pm
Sadly I read the wiki before i started the game, but it did help me find places and stuff for my base.

I discovered that just by taking time to observe the stalkers in their environment, and its even more obvious with PDA entry from scanned things.

You don't need to know that, you're looking for a way to escape the planet and, without spoiler, by following leads and hints in information you gather (scans, PDA data and advices) it ultimately leads you there.

You don't need that gun to enter, you just have to find the right way to enter. But indeed it is easier and quicker with it, and without you are somewhat limited in exploration. Some exploration are also limited by if you have a cutter or not. With both and a repair gun you are allowed access for the full exploration of wrecks in general.

I currently don't know what you are talking about (maybe because I am not far enough in the story), but I do know that you become infected just by spending time in water, only after a few days since crash...

I think you feel the need to look for stuff because you don't really take time to explore and observe the alien planet you are on. Which is sad because it's the main game loop: explore accessible unknown area, discover new stuff to upgrade exploration capabilities, explore previously unaccessible area.
