Ok, on this listen to track two at 1:49. Is this what you're hearing?
If so, it's (as you have no doubt guessed by now) a music track kicking in.
If not I would still guess it was some sort of music track or sound effect as I know of no in lore reason for you to be hearing anything like that in any of the places you mentioned.
Also... all the time I've heard that song at like 1:29:30 and wondered what it is. Now I know...
@peon , I don't think so since I've elimated the source of radiation about 30 hours ago in my playthrough :P
This is the sound. At the time I heard it here, I'm not sure why it happened but after passing the area I came across a large wreck in the crag fields and I heard the static noise again there. I think it might be used to indicate places of interest, like echoes of broken technology. I'm not sure. But I've managed to replicate this sound every single time by passing the jellyshroom cave opening where the seabases are at. The thing is, I don't remember hearing this sound at all in early game but maybe I wasn't attuned to the sounds yet.
Do you guys hear this sound at all?

If that's not it (and you did say you heard it in the safe shallows, so....) then I have no idea.
Unfortunately the reefback started its call the moment the static sound began. But you know when the sound ends when you hear the oxygen tank make a sound. its during the time between the reefback and oxygen tank sounds in this video. It sounds like static and echoes like 4-6 times to make the full sound. Maybe I can make another recording later, but you might have to raise the volume and listen a few times to hear what I'm talking about.
Or a chunk of rock breaking off from another larger feature.
I like to think that you're hearing noises from the slowly dying Aurora, trapped by the thermocline so you hear them even at long distances.
This is what I originally thought, but I can recreate it's activation every time by passing above certain areas. That's what tipped me off that it might actually mean something. I might make a whole video with all of the locations this happens and see if we can find correlations, but it would take me some time.
& @milklkit there's a song that starts with metallic "bells", maybe that's it? Idk which song yet
And I hope the arctic doesn't have these sounds. I listened to them before going to bed and had terrible nightmares that night
It's this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZA2wY5-yiGY just listening to this gave me goosebumps
also this one is a bit creepy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CWXat-LNSM
Ok I think this is getting close, I just need to do some testing. I actually came across a thread on Reddit where someone said the sound happens when you load in a wreck that you used the laser cutter on. Apparently the door might be re-cut when the wreck is loaded and it makes this sound. I haven't compared the sound of the hole breaking through to the static noise but I'll see tonight. The user didn't give any evidence or reasoning but if the sounds are similar it might be true. My only problem with this theory is that I heard it in the floating islands when I hadn't even been there before, so it might just be wrecks on their own.
I also might ask a dev if we don't figure it out cause I'm so so curious it's killing me
@LeeTwentyThree I saw those videos years ago and they gave me serious chills. Maybe that's the reason why this kinda stuff is so intriguing.
