I had a seadragon try grabbing my prawn and it flinged me through the walls. The game still has serious wallglitch and noclip problems. On the other hand - i'm still playing in experimental.
Making a small, one-compartment base and building a storage locker is pretty easy tho - you should make that a priority.
If you need more help may I suggest watching some of my tutorial series:

You can build storage chests immediately. They can be deployed outside of the lifepod at any depth and they will stay in position (unless nudged around). They will not despawn, and they will store a small number of items.
This also causes some other things that should not drift underground to do drift underground. Therefore do not leave anything you value just laying around. Excess titanium or lead can be left laying around safely but not much else.
Now that was funny (5 years later)
How much elapsed time, roughly, in game time?
(Assuming you weren't kidding about finding it...)
