Captive hatched mesmers remain tame once released?
So I finally managed to hack my way through all the bugs and make it to the end. Had everything set up...just had to release and say goodbye to all my pets.

Including my five mesmers that I'd had for most of the game and grew more attached to then my cuddlefish (which is good I guess since they were eaten by a glitch later).

I let them out fully preparing to have to swim away and avoid being attacked except...

They didn't attack me.

At all.

Just swam around me, hunting other fish and chasing off stalkers. They were even leaving dead fish behind that if i'd needed it I could have used for food.

But not a single one made any aggressive actions towards me.

I really hope this isn't another bug because...it's the best thing ever.

I LOVE THEM o.o

Mine only nip you if you swim right up into their face, otherwise they eat ediable fish, espeically garryfish. Stalkers and Sandsharks were sent scurrying, Bonesharks ignored by them. Have yet to test Carbsquid, Amp-eel, Reaper & ghost interactions with them.

It appears that the devs changed some of the manners in our pets on release since the full release of the game.
Previously any of the nasties I've ever kept in my aquarium would attack you immediately on release.
Also if released to close to your base they'd damge it, well crabsquids did and stalkers could become a real nusiance.

I'm going to go and experiment now.

Reaper giving you what for? Creature decoy WAY to expansive to craft? raise some sand sharks, release these in Reaper land, free decoys. Amp eels are great for reaper pacification but are a tad harder to aquire.

i want to make a base surrounded by grow beds full of those spike plants as a defense mechanism

I just went and released a boneshark and it did the same as they have in the past.

Attacked me and my seamoth.

I would'nt want them anywhere near my base.

Leopard plants will attack you no matter where you get them from.

Mesmers only bite you when released. But do take about 10 health when they do.

Crashfish just swim away.

Ampeels attack as per normal.

I released a sand shark right outside my base, this was a while ago. Today he still goes arorund the base and he has never attacked me.
It is my understanding that with the exception of ampeels, none of the fauna you release will attack you, but they WILL attack your vehicles.

The Boneshark, Crabsnake, Ampeel and Mesmer all attacked me when released. The 1st 3 all attacked my seamoth also.

Didn't try the Sandshark, Crabsquid or the Stalker.

Every predatory fish I’ve released in the past just returned to acting the same way it’s wild counterparts do when released. Mesmers are the only ones I’ve released thus far that don’t do that. They’ll bite sometimes if you do something like run right into their face but the dmg is very small. They don’t target you though and don’t attempt to mesmerize you like wild ones do.

They’re like the cats of subnautica lol complete with the killing but not always eating of small prey animals.

They’ll actually eat the really small prey fish but the Peepers, Spadefish, boomerang fish, and hover fish they would mesmerize kill and leave behind. I could then collect the killed fish and cook them to eat myself. My base is in a kelp forest so stalkers would regularly invade my space, especially if I have scanner cameras out, but the mesmers would bite them and then actually chase after them until they were gone from the area before coming back.

This. Not that hard to understand.

Except it’s not true? Every one I’ve relseased has attacked me up until now. Mesmers still bite if you run right into them but they don’t chase you and ate too small to attack vehicles

Stalker from alien containment I released right by my base (I had not read this thread yet). He's friendly. Takes fish from my hand. Just swims around the base and screams sometimes - but seems to be at home here. Not sure how long his good behavior will last. I tried to leave a grav-net to feed him, but he got caught in it, so I took it down.

mesmers will attack all the local fish.. you will see dead peepers around your base

Ayup. But they stay where they are placed and no other predators go there anymore. They make a great picket line around my main base protecting the 6 cuddlefish there. Plus they look cool.
