when you get to level 10 just do the quest that gives you the skeleton key and you won't have to worry about it anymore
you gotta do the nocturnal quest at the shrine though

bruteforcing locks still works and it increases your lockpicking skill even if you fail You do need a good supply of lockpicks or the skeleton key though.
You wouldn't change the broken Leveling system of the original? You wouldn't increase the QoL of the original menu (which this game didn't do, they, in-fact, made it worse).

I'm sorry I just think THAT part is being obtuse.

But, I DO understand the frustrating with Lock-picking ESPECIALLY when the tutorial gives you the WRONG way of doing the lock-picks. I can do Very-Hard locks at the lowest Security possible.

The trick isn't SOUND ... I can't believe they said that.

It's SPEED. You have to lightly tap the pin and the speed of which will indicate whether or not it's okay to lock it in. The issue is, there's variance in the speed acceptable. I can't just say "When it slows down, that's when you do it." Which applies to the first 2 pins, but even that's not entirely accurate.

The sad part is, you simply have to learn the speed from each pin. Learn to tap it and watch as it has SOME effect.

WITH ALL THAT SAID:

You can typically lock the first pin with the first or second tap. You can never lock the first pin if you forcefully shove the pin up, you need to be light.

The Second pin can usually be locked in the 2-3rd tap. If you're in the grove, you can sometimes lock the first pin and then the second pin with 1 tap, but it's inconsistent.

The third pin can usually be locked in about 5-7 taps (I haven't been able to get it to work consistently below 5). I am usually trying to feel out this one, ie; which tap goes faster/slower than the others and can I see it 'reset'. Meaning, if you tap the pin 10 times, does it have 5 potential stages? [No, no, no, yes, no] or does it have 3 stages [No, Yes, No].

and the 4th pin, being rare, is a bit harder to say how many taps - I am usually paying attention to when it slows down - as it USUALLY indicate that it's the one more than the others indicate when slowing down.
I've never been able to get the hang of it, even after playing this game like, what is it, like two decades now? You're supposed to like measure the speed of the pin going up, but my problem is that I don't know if my reaction time just sucks or what, but by the time i figured it's speed out, it's way too late for me to try to lock it in place. So i do what probably a lot of people do and just auto pick it and make sure I buy out the entire inventory of every fence i visit.
Lockpicking is easy though.

Just hit space when the pin goes up slowly and reaches its peak. That's it. You can lockpick very hard locks at level 1 if you learn how the mechanic works lol. It's really not difficult once you get a feel for it. It's all about how fast the pins raise up.

There's always the option of automatic lockpicking, but yeah, it can be tricky.

You can watch the speed of the tumbler. If it's going up slightly slower, you'll have more time to lock it in.

For me, the easiest way to unlock those locks is to keep W pressed at a loose pin. I then press SPACE when the lock pick reaches its highest point, while the pin itself stays a the top as stable as possible.
This will work perfect, if the loose pin don't move at all while W ist pressed.

Sometimes, the loose pin still moves a lot while W ist pressed. Pressing SPACE will break the lock pick now much more likely. In those cases, I prefer to pull or push the look pick to another pin and back again, then hold W pressed again. Repeat, until the loose pin get's more stable.

I've done locks with 4 or 5 pin with this approach in less then 30 seconds without loosing any lockpick. You may give it a try.
what I do is tap it up but tap it until its quick and then after the time that is quick I stick it. rince repeat, you get a rythm going. Hard to explain but its doable, even master locks. Make sure you have lots of pins or do a save before you do a lock.

Where can you buy new lockpicks btw? Do I have to be a member of the thief guild?

You can hold the button down that moves the pins and they stay near the top, then set it. If the pins drop too fast, simply let off that pin and try it again and it will eventually move slower. That's all there it to it. Works every time. You can pick any difficulty of lock with this method regardless of security skill

I forgot since it has been a long time but if oblivion is like morrowind then you can make unlocking spells at one point or enchant something to do it for you.
You can power level it by finding a lock and pushing up on a spot without a tumbler. Just keep pushing the button and your skill level will go up. Shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to reach 100. Lockpicking wont be an issue after that.

I believe so, but there's also Dunbarrow Hallow ( I think is what its called), just under Anvil Castle. It's an old DLC from the original t hat is treated as a "Priate [Thief] Den" that you can own. They have a guy there that you can buy lockpicks from and there's a permentantly locked chest there, that even when you succeed it will remain locked, for training purposes.

Keep in mind, you will have to clear out skeletons who have a cool cutlass, and then you will need to purchase everything for the Priate Den before it's fully functional.
