100+ hours in and I approve of this message.
than I played it and... omg Im sorry, Oblivion, I forgot how great you are Q_Q
but still
Morrowind -> Oblivion -> Skyrim
the deadric shrine quests are also fantastic
I love this so much though. I was walking around one of the towns in the early morning and it was so relaxing just enjoying the music and the light hitting the buildings, so much better than something like Baldurs gate 3 where hundreds of people are all just talking at you all at once non stop.
They tried to put systems for roleplay into it, even if they are archaic and funny at times.
But their intentions are clearly driven by creatling a systemic role playing world. Where combat is just "there"... *click click slash slash*
The last game that I felt was made by such ppl on a bigger budget was Dragon Age Origins.
Since then most bigger RPGs focus on the parts that are videogame and less on the parts that come from the pen&paper world.
Skyrim is fun and i've had a great time modding it. But when i modded skyrim i would be changing MAJOR portions of the game (same for the 2 fallouts BGS made).... but with oblivion I never wanted to change that much of the game because of how much i enjoyed what it is. I feel the same about starfield as it feels more like a return to form for bethesda (not entirely, oblivion will always be my fav but it feels like such a great leap back to what they were).
But yeah Oblivion is kind of one of the kings of RPG games and the height of bethesda as a company if you ask me, its far from perfect but its fun and charming and the jank just makes the game better lol.
I'm enjoying the remaster but I do miss some of the more scuffed voice lines they've redubbed (my heart actually broke when I realized Arvena Thelas's voice got changed) and i miss fast casting.
