To Archer or not to Archer
I always pick up archer as one of my first combat skills and max it out considering how much of the early game is dictated by archery.

Is this a waste? I started to realize that once I have my own Fian's, my personal skill doesn't really matter. I took solace in the idea that I was still boosting their abilities with my captain skills, but then I realized .... I can just get a companion for that and save myself 5 focus points, as long as I can tough it out through the early game.

What you guys think?

For me Archery is a crutch much like being mounted.

Once I freed myself from Archery and Mounts the game became much better and I got much better at playing it.

It all boils down to what you find fun. If shooting people with arrows is your jam then do it. For me I like riding people down with a Spear/lance and/or using 1 hand and shield or 2 jand on foot.

Yeah me too... get the fastest horse (not hardest hitting charge horse) and mow down a line of archers or coming up behind a line of infantry is the jam... like Mad Max'ing around the battlefield, never taking foot off the gas... occasionally calling the Calvary to me to remount another charge from a unprotected side of the enemy... great rush! Nothing escapes you on the fastest horse, all enemy riders and reeled it!
Hmmm
Armour mod for iron boot of head stomping.
oh I feel warm and fuzzy.
Like people said above, archery (and ranged combat in general) is a complete plus in terms of your capability in any battle. If you're playing as a horse archer you can essentially win any field battle with enough focus and time to kill, just retreat when you run out of ammo over and over again. Archery doesn't usually get more kills per minute than one can potentially get with melee, but in cases like siege defenses, you can pelt the enemy with infinite ammo if you have a bow when alternatively, you'd just be standing there waiting for an enemy to approach without one, so overall your effectiveness either remains a steady high or increases dramatically. The player themselves being an archer is also still more useful than an AI archer in any situation anyway, in my opinion. The player can shoot quicker, more accurately, and focus on specific targets whereas the AI just does whatever it wants, usually poorly unless its held up by high numbers and crazy damage like the Fians.
Don't worry about min maxing this game. SP is easy enough on even the highest difficulty settings that you can be an all-rounder and still do everything you want to do.
I use shortbows personally, because I usually go cavalry.

Early game I use it to grind skill XP (and renown) on looter bands. Works pretty well.

Later in the game I use it as a "chaser" weapon. Essentially when I'm chasing other cavalry, but I'm not in melee distance yet I use the bow. Bows are much more accurate when the skill is levelled properly, so they're my go to.

Thrown weapons are a good second though if you don't want to commit to a full bow+arrows on your person, but they're noticably less accurate and have less ammo, meaning you need to be closer (And more skilled).

I don't worry about my combat skills. I put a few points into them. But otherwise it's all about the management skills.

I min-max a bit by putting my first points into combat related skills. Makes you get a lot more exp a lot faster by grinding on looters. Then spend the levels you get on management related stuff.

I've been doing this with great effect even in sieges, riding in behind the infantry and carving them up. Been using a nice long sword but after some reading I think I'll switch to a glaive for that role now, already carry an axe for fighting on foot. :steamhappy:
For attacking siege battles I recommend:-

1. Short bow.
2. A camel. (For the extra height)
3. lots of cheese sandwiches. (they taste great)
I use some archer too but 2 handed weapons is priority no archer. But still in good do some first kills with bows.
i fight like a real man and ride into battle with a two handed axe, sword, shield and lance
