How to give companions horses?

So ... yeah. Lots of companions have a riding stat of 0, so how do I get them to learn?

Give em a sumpter horse. Their riding skill will go up, slowly.

What do you mean unequippable? It should be as easy as just dragging the horse out of their inventory slot.

And no, they have to have a horse to level up riding, period.

Play the game and try dragging a sumpter horse into a characters horse slot. It doesn't work. A message pops up stating that sumpter horses cannot be equipped.

I just did. Got a new companion with 0 riding skill. I gave him a sumpter horse without difficulty. Are you sure you aren't mixing it up with a SADDLE horse, or forgot to give them a saddle?

Sorry, no clue if its a bug or if there is a new low lvl horse for companion training, i haven't played the newest update yet.

Just letting you know that you can modify the game yourself to "fix" it.
Make a back up of the if you do, just in case you do something silly by accident.
Go to "game directory/Modules/sandboxcore/Modules core/spritems" and open Horses_and_others.

Search for Saddlehorse. Set difficulty="0"

You can't equip a saddle if there is no horse equipped. And I can't equip any horse or mule, cow, pig, sheep or anything else to a companions mount slot when they have 0 riding skill.

Devs broke horses 2 versions back. They claim they "fixed" an issue that you could ride pack animals. Just that there is nothing except pack animals that have 0 riding skill required.
...and the damn thing is listed as a mount in the description, so it doesn't make sense at all.

Kinda funny because when you start a new game, your default horse is a sumpter one..

One of my companions came riding with "old sumpter horse". Maybe that's the ridable sumpter horse everyone is looking for.

If you unequip the starting horse you can't equip it back.

Companions can only get from 0 to 10 riding by doing tournaments, unless you tinker with XML files.

I used a standard sumpter horse for my test. Tested it with another random companion. Same result, they could equip it without issue.

People not being able to equip is probably an aforementioned bug by the sounds of it.

maybe by tournaments unless they broke something im sure u used to be able to equip a horse i just cant remember which one

It's something they broke in the last update, because I was using them just fine before that. Now I can no longer equip Sumpter Horses of any kind, nor mules, as mounts, either on my existing save I had before the update, nor on a new game I just started, with no mods loaded and no files changed from default.
