Yeah I figured I've seen some crazy 3000 asset players with 16Gb of RAM while I struggle to launch with a tenth of that!
I also did that as the 1st thing before I started playing again. Also unsubscribed all of the workshop content and went in to re-download all the good stuff. (Took hours)
I did both of these things to avoid such problems yet this is what I face.
Going to verify game cache because apparently missing vanilla files can lead to a vanilla memory leak, which explains crashing post loading screen. Yet that doesn't tackle the whole running out of memory whilst having less than 200 assets loaded debacle.
And I need those assets...
(Already using the Load Screen Mod. It gets to around 13 Gb during loading which of course hits the magical ceiling with Windows taking the rest. Meaning the whole game goes down along with all the other running software.)

if you have any that are red especially vehicles i would consider removing them. you don't want too many super high poly vehicles running in your city this will eat up memory. it's ok to use assets that have a high poly count just not the ones that will spawn hundreds of them :P
Okay I'll give this a go with the assets and see which ones do what. Though I don't know how much that will matter because I just checked that my Cities:Skylines is using just around 10 Gb of RAM just to run the vanilla.
Something isn't right here...
Launch Steam only,
Go to Library
Scroll to cities skylines and right click it and select Properties.
Click Set Launch Options, then type in exactly --noWorkshop click okay
Close properties windows.
Click on Play button for cities skylines start a new city then report your results here.
Just did this and it definitely "fixed" the issue of the game using up too much memory in vanilla. How come assets affect performance even when disabled? My game is running at roughly 6 Gb RAM usage now, when it was 10 before.
This is very interesting. I'm just not sure where to proceed from now.
(Turning off Workshop test indicates that could be possible...)
Do the same test, but only use --disableMods instead, then report your results.
Yes it definitely was an asset or two. I heavy handedly got rid of many assets and when I got the game going enough for it to start I went further and got rid of the heaviest assets using the mesh info mod.
Now I run at a comfortable 10 Gb usage of RAM while running 167 assets and 12 mods. I'll be more careful with adding assets & mods and maps in the future.
