Traffic optimization issue
I don't know if I'm missing something here.

I have got a 2*3 lanes road connecting to a roundabout made out of a highway track. You'd think the vehicles would spread out on the lanes to optimize space and speed of access to the roundabout... but no. Most of them just stay on the middle lane. The result is an accumulation of vehicles all the way down that 6 lane road that also happens to be the main road going through my whole city. Given that all three lanes of that way give access to the roundabout, this is not because the vehicles need to stay on the middle lane. So what's going on?

That's due to the way the AI works in the game. It can be resolved through better designs or with the help of mods. I recommend checking out Youtube for ideas on how to leverage AI behavior in your favor. I use a combination of both.

As for mods, I quite like this one:

Here's a vid showing how to use it:

Using mods disables achievements, but there is a mod for that too.

You may want to rethink why so many cars are using that one roundabout, and find alternate routes for traffic.

Maybe you need a bridge or two to cross that river?

Thanks for the Mod recommendation. This is a life saver. Now I've got a well deserved car plug on that bridge on all lanes that I'll happily deal with through some city engineering.

Sounds like you've got a set up like in this video:

As you'll see near the end of the video that changing the roundabout to 2 lanes meant the vehicles approaching the roundabout started to use 2 lanes on lead up to the roundabout as well.

It takes a little while for the roundabout to free up as there loads of existing traffic already waiting, which sadly doesn't really happen til after the end of the video, but the video was more to show a newbie how I actually built it.

I always recommend experimenting with design as well. As far as traffic goes, that isnt much backed up. bit of junction cleanup can resolve that nicely.

Mods might get traffic flowing again temporarily, but city is still small. Use this as an opportunity to find non mod solutions else it is inevitable will end up in a situation where traffic backs up far to bad. It doesnt take much either.

They only stop in one conga line like that if there is one particular spot obstructing them up ahead. What is causing it is whats most important. To me it looks like they keep stopping on entry. That roundabout is pretty empty

I had the same problem, and noticed they were taking shortcuts through various places. It was a pain, but I bulldozed various roads and closed them off to cut through traffic, reinstalled the roundabout using the video, and also have TMPE. I noticed that the lanes arrows were not set up correctly so redesigned the arrows for the lanes, as well as where traffic should flow from one lane to the next for a particularly stubborn traffic node. It takes time and patience to edit through everything, but the results can be better traffic flow.

Where TPME shines is just ensuring people turn into correct lanes. This can be a major cause of jams on the highway. Identifying stuff like shortcuts is major. It happened in my city recently in a thread made about traffic, I had a bridge that was backing up because of shortcutting, so bulldozed the bridge!

There are possibly shortcut issues, but TMPE helped me smoothen things out by actually making everything more realistic. For those interested, here's what I did:

1) Allowed lane changes at junctions

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1760543049

2) Manually set lane changes at junctions and within roads

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1760543221

3) Set yield signs at roundabout connections

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1760543340

And voilà ! Still a busy road, but now the vehicles behave as expected.

@mbutton15 That's a nice roundabout idea though. I'll definitely try it.

This is how I lane manage my roundabouts with TM:PE and have never had an issue
