Potential crash solution
Hi there -

Just creating a separate, sticky thread for higher visibility regarding crashes.

Through our official beta patch threads, we've been advising users to temporarily turn off the anti-virus software if they experience consistent crashes in sections such as the Ch. 3-1 castle water room and Ch. 1-3 swamp area.

Here's a recent example from a user who use BitDefender:
Originally posted by DarkRoad09:
Problem fixed. no crash in the castle so far. I went to bitdefender--->settings/antivirus/ set "on access scanning" to off, and set "active virus control" to off. now game is working fine.

And here's a snip from the official beta thread:

Reproducible Crashes
If you are experiencing crashes repeatedly in the same area (such as the swamp area), there is a chance that your anti-virus software may be deleting important game files or simply preventing the game from accessing certain files. If so, please try the following steps in order to isolate the issue:

1) Disable or temporarily shut down the anti-virus software
2) Open Steam client, right-click on Resident Evil 4 from Library, and select Properties
3) Click Local Files tab and select 'Verify integrity of game cache..."
4) Once the verification process completes, launch the game and verify if the crash still occurs (make sure to keep the anti-virus software turned off during this test)

Please also check the following two Steam Support articles which covers crashes as it relates to anti-virus software and other 'hidden' Windows processes that may interfere with the game and/or Steam client.

1. Programs Which May Interfere with Steam
2. Antivirus software reports Steam games are malicious

Please let us know if this solved your problem. Thanks!

I had no crashes and I don't use any antivirus software.
This really could be the reason ^^

@wbacon, patch 1.0.6 soon?
I'll need to follow up with the development team on this, but nothing this weekend as far as I'm aware. I will of course update the community as soon as I have information.

i have an anti-virus on my system. but never had any crashing issue. if people wondering what anti-virus i'm using? its Mcafee. been using it well for over a decade now.

@Wbacon update the fix: no need to turn off bitdefender anymore, go to bitderender-->settings-->antivirus--->exclusions--->excluded files and folders-->add--> steam folder.

add--> resident evil 4 folder.
add--> bio4
add--> imagepack/imagepackhd
add----> all you want.

also turn game mode on.

that way the antivirus won't bother those folders

I noticed it helps with the audio desync, , i even noticed no slowdowns so far. my game works like a charm.

CPU: Intel Core i7 4770K
GPU: GTX 460
RAM: 8GB DDR3 2400

100% of the time I click launch the game crashes instantly. The game has worked perfectly fine thus far except just recently. I don't have any anti-virus processes running in the background. I am currently running the 1.0.5 beta.

I have tried the following:
- Opting back out of the beta and launching the normal version.
- Verifying the integrity of the local game cache files for both versions. No errors reported.
- Un-installing the game entirely and re-installing.
- Searching the forums for someone with a similar issue to mine to no avail.

Any ideas on a solution? Appreciate you guys keeping in contact with the community. :]

Have you manually modified any of the INI files lately? If so, try deleting all of those and redownload the default files through 'verify game cache...'

The game may have problems launching if the INI file is altered in a way the game cannot understand.

Files in question are:
config.ini
usr_input.ini
input.ini

Try deleting the above files, resync/redownload default files by verifying the game cache, and then launch the game.

Note: some of these files may be stored in c:\users\username\documents\my games\capcom\re4\ instead of the game installation directory. That's the path for Windows 7, so it may be a bit different for other versions of Windows.

Thanks! Solved the problem immediately.

Edit: I located my RE4 config files in C:\Users\[username]\My Games\Capcom\RE4

I deleted all of the config files then the game launched properly. I however noticed when I tried to load my game, the game would just sit at a black screen and never load the game. I ASSUME it's because the new config files weren't generated yet. To fix the black screen issue, I had to enter the video settings and configure the way I wanted them so a config file would be generated. It's worked perfectly ever since then.
