Our Resident Evil 4 HD Texture Project
Updating the OP to reflect current info (updated 5/12/2016):

In 2005, Resident Evil 4 debuted as one of the most graphically impressive games of that console generation. Now, over a decade later, the visuals certainly show their age.

At this point it seems safe to say that an official across-the-board HD revamp of the game isn't coming anytime soon. As a result, this project was born: a complete HD texture overhaul that remains true to the original artistic intent and tone of the game.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES
* Be true to the original textures, intent, and tone of the game
* By default, improve the texture resolution by 800-1600%, unless a greater increase is necessary
* Wherever possible, leverage the original real-life sources for a given texture

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
** What version of the game is this project for?
The Ultimate HD version released in 2014 for PC.

** Who are you?
We’re two guys who love Resident Evil 4 and want to help create the definitive version of the game from a graphical perspective. Cris is from the midwest in the US, while Albert lives in Spain. Albert’s experience goes all the way back to the 2007 PC release of the game, for which he created one of the most definitive and well-received texture packs, while this is Cris’ first attempt.

** How much of an upgrade will this be?
We are essentially taking each texture, scaling it up 8-16 times the original resolution (in most cases) and redrawing / remaking from there. Additionally, there are many many instances where Albert has been able to find the original source materials used, which allows us to faithfully replicate the original intent at a much higher resolution.

** Do you want feedback?
Definitely! Please comment on any post on our site (http://www.re4hd.com) to give us feedback on our progress. In some cases it will help shape the end product!

** How can I keep up with your progress?
There are several ways to stay connected:
* Our site: http://www.re4hd.com
* Twitter: @re4hdproject
* Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/re4hd
* This thread

** How can we support the project?
There are a few ways to help support: 1) Let others know about it! 2) Comment if you have feedback / kind words. 3) Donate (offsets the costs of the hardware / software / textures purchased for this project, travel for acquiring real-life texture sources, etc).

** Where are you finding the real-life texture sources?
Capcom did a lot of photography work in various areas of Spain and Wales for this game (and others), and they also leveraged existing texture libraries. So for us, it's a combination of the following:
* Going to and photographing those same locations
* Finding hi-res images online of those locations
* Simply finding the original texture images used

** Have you released any of your work?
Yes. A "draft" version of the entire Village section is available at our site (re4hd.com) -- click on the link at the top that says, "Village Download"

** How long will this project take?
The project is now slightly over 2 years old. Based on our current progress I believe 3 years is a reasonable estimate. However it's difficult to really gauge.

** Can I join the project?
While anyone is welcome to let us know about any resources that may be helpful, we're not looking to add any official collaborators at this time.

** How much of the game is going to be retextured?
Just about every texture, including those for Separate Ways, Mercenaries, etc.

** How much has been completed?
We are working through the game in the following order:
- Environmental Textures
- Items and Weapons
- Enemies, NPCs, Playable Characters, Misc.
- Mercenaries, Separate Ways, and anything not covered above

I'm sure someone has asked this before, but trying to find the answer among 125 pages of comments is a bit daunting.

Do you guys not work for Capcom? If so, how are you able to modify the textures without Capcom taking issue with it?

Do you strictly work with textures or can you do some bug fixes (or optimizations) as well? If not, is there any hope for getting a few updates to work out some of the bugs or make this game more compatible with modern hardware/operating systems?

I don't even know what this game looks like in HD textures with 60 fps and so on becuase I have to turn all of the graphics settings off or down to the minimum in order to make this game playable. Even then it doesn't work out so well at times.

They don't work for Capcom, and while Capcom doesn't condone modifications per se, they don't exactly discourage it either. They seem to largely not care for the most part, so long as it isn't illegal activity.
Unfortunately, the issues with the game other than texture quality have to do with the port itself. The only way to remove the framerate being linked to the game speed and add a frameskipping feature is to essentially rewrite the port from scratch. The same goes with stability and other related issues that the game may have.
Finally, you're not alone. I seem to have been fortunate with this game and never had any issues other than the somewhat damning gamepad controls, but there are others with killer PCs that still to this day cannot play the game at 60fps, or sometimes 30.

Edit to the second bit: The port is essentially optimized badly as well, which is why it's gengerally encouraged that players have an i5 or i7 CPU. I'm sure Capcom could have fixed it with a few updates, but they focused mainly on the quality of life stuff when they were actively patching the game, which is unfortunate.

I see. That's too bad. My GPU is admittedly underpowered, but the rest of my computer is fine. I wish Capcom would devote a little time to fixing some of these issues considering RE4 is one of, if not THE most popular of the franchise.

They can leave the retexturing to these guys. They seem to be doing a fine job and I'm really looking forward to seeing what the castle and island areas will look like when they're finished.

I'm particularly interested in seeing what Ada, Ashley, and Hannigan will look like when they get to that part.
Im new here, long time fan of the gamecube version and I think this looks awesome! cant wait to get my hands on this to have another replay of RE4!

I dont mean to complain on such a well done mod, but I have to say there are some things I dont like. Most everything is way better, and Im merely nitpicking here but... certain things look worse.

Particularly I notice wood looks fake and flat compared to the grittier looking wood in the original. Two places I noticed this were the "danger" signs in the village with the bloody pointy bones, and also the big gate that only ashley can climb to open (before the 2nd el gigante) it just seems too "polished" for wood. even though the original is low res it looks old and worn which is better I think (though this is one little thing)

Another thing I noticed, there was some bag of wheat or rice I noticed, in this new HD mod your textures and 3D modeling are soooo much better but there are tiny little details that are missing like tears in the bag

Maybe its just because Im looking at older screenshots and your still improving things?

Hello! It's never bad to give feedback, so don't worry about it. I agree that some of the earlier wood textures look too clean, and I'll keep the other points in mind for future revisions as time allows. Please feel free to look at our site (re4hd.com) where you can see the more recent updates in photo gallery form, and if you have additional feedback please don't hesitate to share! Thank you!!
When will we have the new post? I cannot wait to play it!

This was a good read, thanks! :) More of these kind of posts (that not only show HD development but also show how the game logic/files work) would be welcome too!
AMAZING findings guys!! really, the version by far, cant wait to see more!
Incredible. I cannot wait!
