Why does everyone love this game so much?
I've watched some of the let's play videos, and the game seems kind of antiquated. Is this one of those games where people's memories of it are more golden than the actual game?

It was incredibly intense for its time when you first start out. You had to use the environment to your advantage, barricading doors and windows to keep the enemies out. The pacing is also fantastic. Always some new threat or weapon being introduced from start to finish. Its hard really to find anything negative to say about the game. Really the only thing I can think about is how you can modify your guns unrealisticly, but thats mainly just gun nerd talk. The story might also turn some off with its B-movie material, but I find it to be part of Resident Evil's charm.

Oh, one definite negative is the QTEs. Not only did I hate that element but you can really thank Resident Evil 4 for making that horrible mechanic popular.

No this game still holds up well and is a lot of fun to play.

No, the actual game is very good. It's got the right balance of design and technology. The combat system may look like it's horrible to get used to but I'd recommend watching this:

I replay it just about yearly on the gamecube. To be honest, it's only gotten better with age. Especially considering the shabby state of Resident Evil today. This was the last game to really have it all in the series: scares, atmosphere, gameplay, and a story that doesn't make you completely go wtf. I haven't even tried the HD version yet.

Resident Evil is a legendary series - and for a good reason. RE4 is widely regarded as the pinicle of the series for good reason (even if RE2 will forever be my personal favorite). If you played RE5 or 6 and wondered to yourself, "what would this game be like with excellent atmosphere, characters that I actually liked and cared about, a much better inventory system, more frightening enemies and a story line that I could follow?" the answer to that question would be Resident Evil 4.

I often caught myself asking the same question..
The older Resident Evil games were much more "unforgettable" IMO.

Resident Evil 5 was my first game in the series, and I loved it.

Because it's a masterpiece in game design, and thus, an immensely enjoyable experience. It can be played in a variety of styles and no gameplay element is present without reason. Since it's so well thought out, everything about it fits.

I'll buy it then if it goes on sale. I'm buying too many games right now. I have to be more selective.

one of the big reasons why i find this game ages so well and why it continues to age well is in its campaign design/flow. the game is always throwing new enemies or scenarios at you and rarely ever reuses elements. This is something that tends to transcend generations. No matter how much money you throw at a project or how much man power you devote to it, it wont mean ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ if you dont have the talent and ideas to pull it off. Thats what RE4 does best. its painfully well polished, combat immensely tight(even by todays standards) which allows you to manipulate the AI in various ways. plus youre always seeing or doing something interesting every 20minutes and it keeps this up for 20hours which for an action is almost unheard of. Combine that with tons of replay value in its campaign with lots of unlockable weapons, costumes, NG+ and lots of side extras in minigames and side storys and the whole package puts to shame most games now.

its one of the few games where i can pretty much play at any time just because the actual combat is pulled off so well.

I love this game more than RE5 or 6, and mainly because of that satisfactory feeling when killing stuff.
