If you're playing for the "campy" story, then I'd say definitely refund. If that's what you're looking for, play RE1 (not the remake) or Shadows of the Damned.
I sense you already have your answer though, since you bothered to make this thread.
There have been games that I've had to make several attempts to "get", but wound up enjoying. Lots of games have lousy openings. I just wanted to know if this was one of them (for me), or if the gameplay would improve. I guess not. I don't really blame the game for this, third-person shooters were still finding their feet on consoles when this was made.
The game is basically about wiping out hordes of the same enemies so you can move to the next area. They'll just get reskinned and will get a few more weapons eventually, but they're basically constant hordes of the same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ enemies through the whole game, with the exception of specific nice segments where you thankfully have to fight against other monsters or bosses.
And that's pretty much it. For people who love shooters it should be a great game, though if you're really not into that genre or if you were looking for something else, then it can be really a chore to play through.
Generally, if you cannot find anything worthwhile until the end of 2-1, then I suggest just giving up. Despite its fame and popularity, RE4 is not for everyone, as it tries to be both a classic survival horror and a third-person shooter, but actually it is mediocre at both (just comes off as a good combination).
You may try RE5 if you want a shooter or RE1 if you want a survival horror though. Both concentrate on those fields exclusively and do rather good jobs at it.
RE4 is continuation after all, noobs onlystart from t hisone, skipping previoious games, and lose universe story and mystery.
RE4 was my very first RE Game I played, and thoroughly, if in a twisted "I am so scared way", enjoyed, without any prior knowledge. I disliked RE1 HD Remake I played afterwards, due to limited saves and crimson heads, but I loved RE2 and 3
survival horror games are about saving your ammo and supplies you can run and conserve and use your knife etc.
if youre dying a lot in the first chapter and the game isnt fun then it isnt going to get any better for you maybe you wont like it
theres only 2 crimson heads in the entire game if you do knife-only and you only have to fight 1 of them :)
Oh, the typical "you suck" argument. Think a bit outside the box and you'll realize that not everyone has fun playing the same kind of games.
