Rocket League
How does the ranked system work?
Recently I've been trying to play ranked. The last time I played ranked was with the old ranks like prospect and challenger. I'm pretty bad, and since I have no friends that are at my same skill level, and I don't want to ruin some rando's experience, I play 1v1s. After finishing my placement matches I got placed in Gold 1 Div 2. My next match I lost in overtime (4-5) and I got moved to SILVER 2 DIV 3. I skipped an entire rank! Is this even supposed to be possible? So, after recovering from my shock at how far I dropped in one match, I played a few more games. On average, it took me two wins in a row to go up one division, maybe three if I started at the very bottom of the division. But every time I lost, I would drop a division. No matter how many wins it had been since I last went up a division. Eventually I made it up to Silver 3 Div 2. This was all a few days ago. Today, I booted up the game and tried again. I lost my first match and got put right back in Silver 2 Div 3. From one loss. So, I have no idea how the ranking system works. From my experience it takes 2 wins to div up, and one loss to lose a division. This means that to climb reliably, I would have to win 66% of my games. This seems ridiculous. The other observation I made was that the first game you play after logging on makes about a 5x bigger impact on your rank than the rest of them. At least losing the first game makes a huge impact. I haven't been fortunate enough to win my first game of the day yet. So, if anyone knows why this is happening, I would really like to know.

Ok now sorry for the multi-post but I'll adress the OP now and idk how much of an attention span some people have, so I'll just do it in a new one.

The reason your rank was so "jumpy" at the beggining is precisely this:
Цитата допису Made In Australia:
The last time I played ranked was with the old ranks like prospect and challenger.
Game runs on soft resets now unlike in Season 3 when you stopped playing. In other words it takes your MMR from previous seasons to place you along side the 10 placement games. Also early games after the placement give you more MMR(or take away more) than usual. Which allows smurfs to climb higher quicker.
You however had no previous MMR for the game to go off of, so your Gold 1 Div 2 wasn't a final placement. Combine that with previously mentioned early-games MMR boost is the reason why upon a loss you fell to Silver 2 Div 3.
As to how the rest of the magic works this has already been posted so I won't bother:
Цитата допису Acidic__Thought:
Ranks are entirely based on MMR. You gain MMR via wins and losses, and there's no set amount of wins and losses it takes to go up/down. You gain MMR via wins, and can gain more MMR if your opponent had a higher MMR than you. You lose more MMR if your opponent has a lower MMR than you.
If you are curious about the "magic behind the scenes" of your ups and downs then go here:
https://rocketleague.tracker.network/profile/steam/76561198222722696
If you refresh it after every game or hit "Live tracking" you'll see all your MMR changes.
However I'd recommend downloading AlphaConsole or BakkesMod and enabling MMR display feature. That way you'll see yours, your opponents MMR and post game changes in-game. Which will allow for more convienient and more indepth analysis of your rank situation.
Q: Wow that cool, I had no idea about that! How much MMR do I need to get to X tho?
A: Go here: https://rocketleague.tracker.network/distribution/10

Also few corrections on what you said/claimed:
There are only 4 Divs per rank now, Season3 was the last one with 5.
Also this...

...would mean that you need 66% to be wins in order to KEEP your rank, not rank UP. And it does seem ridiculous coz it is... along side it not being the case. Just saying :P

How is it ridiculous to be expected to win the majority of games? If it's 50/50 you're clearly not skilled enough to progress to the next rank.

I think the ranking system is different for everyone and I don't know why. It's use to be a win makes you go up, a loss makes you go down.

For me it takes about 3 or 4 wins in a row to division up, and usually 2 losses in a row to go down a divison (1 loss to go down on sometimes) It's weird and doesn't make perfect sense but it's how it is right now. Don't worry too much about ranks, it will mentally bring you down

Better explanation haha

Sorry but that’s absolute nonsense, everyone plays under the exact same ranking system. You are just adding to the already high level of confusion around matchmaking on the forums.
From experience, the system is FUBAR and it really needs to be fixed or something or a overhaul or something, because right now, each match is a 45% chance to be easy wins, 45% no chance to win and 10% for a truely balanced match (the best kind in my opinion) so most of my matches are either one sided in my team's favor or in the other teams favor.....not balanced at all.

I know i am gold to platinum level in skill, but due to luck in my solo-queueing, i have been able to achieve Diamond I, Division IV in 3s, the players on my team were just VERY good and they pretty much carried me to victory 75% of the time, the other 25% i got MVP......its just messed up and Psyonix needs to fix it and the easiest way to fix it is this.

1: Set group MMR to highest in group instead of group average

2: Hard Reset

Boosters would be virtually extinct, since if you group with a Diamond as a Silver or a Bronze or a Gold, you will face Diamonds........just like you would if you grouped with a Champion, you would face others of the same rank or so of the highest rank in the party.

That is how they should do it to fix it....until players discover a way to get easy wins without outright cheating.

Yes you should have to win a majority of your games to rank up, but the climb shouldn't be so steep. Think about it from a mathematical standpoint. Winning 2 out of every 3 games is completely insane. Obviously you have to be better than 50/50 to rank up, IF you gain and lose the same amount of MMR per win/loss. BUT I am losing entire ranks in one game, and it takes me multiple wins to even go up one DIVISION. It's 5 divisions per rank, so losing one game and going down an entire rank is equal to 10 wins needed to get back to that point. Nobody in the world has a 10:1 win/loss ratio. If you can win a majority of your games, say 8/15, or 53.3%, you will eventually rank up, again according to the MMR gain/loss ratio being equal. I would be ok with slightly smaller gains than losses, to insure that the scale cannot be tipped so easily by unreliable factors such as luck, but needing a 90% winrate to just break even if you are unlucky enough to lose your first game of the day is absurd.

Your first game of the day is not magical and doesn't affect the rest of your matches.

It's half-TrueSkill and half-ELO. Possibly the most accurate ranking system there is. It's balanced. You're thinking of yourself "I'm superior than my team" rather than thinking of effects. Get this through your head: Everyone has their off days. Which may include players have been playing too long, too pist off, too drunk or high, or too simply tired.

All in all, you're speaking from solo queing experience, playing with randoms. Here's the solution: Get a team. Don't have friends? Then make some. Don't want to? Oh well, sucks to be you.

First, Cut the attitude.

I have quite a few friends that play this game, but they are Diamond III or higher and i refuse to be boosted, they have offered to play ranked with me, but i prefer not to mess up their rank because of my lack of skill compared to them, cause when we play private matches for fun, like with mods and stuff, they always massacre me, you know the term 'i got the short straw' ? well that is when it comes to being on my team....they picked the short straw, but they are cool about it.

I have tried alot of different players to make a team, but they all expect perfection and when they don't get it, they get severely toxic....so toxic, it would make the devil blush.

First, that was NOT attitude. It was being truthful.

Having friends that are higher than you is understandable. However you're in "gold hell". It's expected of your rank to witness toxic players.

Which means that on average 100% of your games are balanced and you still get that sweet sweet 50/50 win/loss ratio :P

Already told you that back in the day. That wouldnt change anything apart from friends not wanting to play together anymore.
What you're describing is NOT boosting. If both players are on their main accounts and que up then thats fair play.
Actual boosting happens through the use of smurf accounts and/or handing your account over to the booster.

Anyways I sincerely wish you a better luck with teaming with people. Hope you wont give up :P

That’s the thing. I’m aware that’s not how it’s supposed to work, but it did. At least for me. I understand that I have no MMR history for the game to judge me on, but jumping an entire rank in a non-placement match twice seems excessive.

Thanks! This sounds like what happened, though I'm still confused as to why it kept happening after I played multiple games. Nevertheless, I appreciate the in-depth answer, resources, and corrections you provided.
