Dark Nights and Gamma changing.
The nights are dark in Rust, I get that. Frustratingly dark for most. It's not a time to jog around carelessly and using flashlights can give you away to other players. That's the way it is intended to be. You can raid or hit rad sites at night more safely if you are smart. You can harvest certain locations more safely if you are smart. And most people are not out and about.

All intended and all great. I like that people are rewarded for being sneaky.

Where this falls apart is people that change their gamma. IMO this is a direct subversion of game design and cheating. Attacking players at night who can't see because they didn't use an outside of the game advantage is BS.

I really hope that Rust eventually knows what your gamma is set at for your monitor, and adjusts in game gamma accordingly. So that everyone has to play the same game and no unfair advantages. (not a hard and fast number, different monitors are different, but small ranges of acceptable numbers)

im black and my screen is bright when i turn it on game mode. asus 24inch. . while my other friends can't see a thing. as far as turning gamma up along with game mode, yes, its totally cheating, i've tried it and yes it screws the game for everyone, but im not going to keep turning it up and down every day/night cycle. but you know everyone else is.

It doesn't matter because you can't stop it from happening due to the fact that it's not cheating in the sense of the word that gets you banned. It's a hardware modification that is totally allowed though not condoned. You can't VAC ban people for using their own hardware the way they prefer.

Mainly it's completely undetectable.

True, but even if it were detectable, it doesn't matter because its not cheating. It's a hardward modification that's provided to me by the seller of that hardware. I can use it when and where i want, for whatever reason. Even if it's to gain an advantage in a video game. Cheating is when you change the software with hack. It's not a hack when the hardware vendors program it.

You do not get to define what cheating is. Using outside the game advantages to completely change your play experience outside of what is intended allowing you to play better is cheating. Whether it be macro's, bots, scripts, hardware, etc.

Also, it's not hardware, the program that changes gamma is software :D.

You can change the gamma right on your monitor.

Just to make sure we're clear on this: YOU are the one who gets to define cheating?

"Cheating in video games involves a video game player using non-standard methods for creating an advantage beyond normal gameplay, usually to make the game easier. Cheats sometimes may take the form of "secrets" placed by game developers themselves."

I don't think this is going to happen on a game thats in alpha because they don't even have this on any arma game.

Im not subjectively defining what "cheating" is. The industry defines it. Its not cheating to use the hardware i have the way i want. That's not what a cheat actually is by the industries definition.

Is it cheating in the generic sense of the word? Yes, but that's irrelevant because the industry doesn't define cheats that way and hence does nothing about it.

And the software merely controls the hardware, the hardware changes the gamma in the end.
But ppl can change gamma in hardware aswell. I can control it on my monitor alone.

The core of the issue is can i use my hardware the way i want to use it. The fact that gives me an advantage is irrelevant because its not something that can be considered "cheating" using the contractual definition of the word.

Alot of people do it so they can kill people at night aswell as the day time. Most who do it don't actually lack skill at all.

And im not defending it more than just explaining how there isn't much you can do about it.

The ability to hunt at night without needing outside assistance is also a skill. It can be learned. Why do you think I made the thread? This is a skill I picked up during my life that came in handy for this game. Other people used computers to cheat the system becasue they were not willing to gain this skill.

Nobody turns up gamma to hunt at night. They do it because it allows them to see more clearly and prevents them from being ganked by those who do turn it up.

You picked up a skill to hunt at night? Real life has nothing to do with video games lol. You real life skills dont apply here.

Not willing to gain this skill? So what? Who says they have to "gain that skill". You seem to think everyone should play like you.
