How Long Will My Base Last
After playing rust for a wile I have noticed a few things. Some people ae friendly, Like this group of people I met. They gave me things when I had nothing. And didnt even once consider Killing me. The other 90% of people it's Raid, Murder, Take all your stuff, And you cant stop me. But I have Finally built a base where the only entrance is two metal doors, and its surrounded by wooden barricades. I heard about this decay thing and I was wondering what is the decay rate on wooden barricades and is my base secure enough. The server I play on is pretty low traffic and mostly friendly. But i have already been seeing mising things from my crates. Now that I have my new fortress how long will I last if im not an active player on rust. I know its a long post but I dont want to start over again. That would be the third time on the same server. Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure, i think it's a couple of (real life) days, but it might depend on the server as well.

Decay varies depending on the material and the levels. In general it starts top down (top floor decays first) and only starts after you've been offline for X amount of time (dependent on material).

Specifics:

What is decay?

Decay is a feature added to the game because of the mass amounts of player-made structures on the map, which the servers couldn't handle.

Decay works by slowly destroying your base from the top going down. Each layer of your structure should take 4 days to be destroyed. Doors decay seperately because they are not actually connected to your foundation or the actual structure itself. A "structure" is defined as a series of foundations, all connected, and anything built on top of them. This can include shelters, spike walls, and barricades, and of course all of the actual "building" components.

Preventing Decay

Decay starts on a timer. After the last time you update your structure (i.e. opening/closing a door, turning on a campfire, etc.), a timer starts. It lasts for 12 hours on wood shelters, 24 hours on wood buildings, and 4 days on metal buildings. Once the timer reaches 0, the components of the building begin to decay, as described above. Updating your structure will reset the timer and halt all decay until the timer reaches 0 again. It will not, however, repair your structure automatically. Updating your structure can be accomplished by adding more structure to your building or by simply interacting with a door. (This needs more testing to verify if the entire structure is reset or not)

Repairing Decay

If a certain part of your base has decayed (e.g. a door), then you need to repair it with the resource used to create it. Metal fragment fix metal structures, wood fixes wood structures. To repair, place the resource that you will be using to repair in your hotbar (6 slots on the bottom of your inventory). Then, face the object that you wish to repair and press the key of the slot that your resource is in.

So a 3 story building would take nearly 3 weeks to completely decay, but the top floor would be gone at the end of day 5 (1 day to start decaying, 4 to completely decay).

As it says, you just need to open a door or two to let the game know you are still there.

If things are missing from your crates you likely got raided.

None of what is written above is true. After 24 hours your walls and stairs (all of them) no matter how many levels up will begin to decay after 48 hours they will dissapper then after 48 more hours your pillers will dissapper finally 48 hours later the foundation dissappers. Trust me it's happened to me many time I have over 200 hours play time. But there are some servers that turn decay off so your house last forever no matter how long you stay logged out.Just remember log in at least once a day and open a door and it wont start to decay. Hope I could help.

Thanks guys. So as long as I'm on once a day it should be fine?. I guess so. nobody is really agressive on that server so i can repair without too much damage done to my building. My building is pretty raidproof for the most part. I cant find another way in. And its not so big anybody would waste an Explosive on it. so I should be good for a while.

You should be fine. But that's the reason that someone would waste explosive on it that it's not so big. 2 explosives for mediocore loot is worthit.

Well if you are still looking for an answer:
A Small Base (1-3 Foundations) will last about 3 Days on a Server with many Active players, more or less depending on how hidden it is,the number of sleepers, the number of Doors inside and the number of Crates.
On a mostly friendly and low Traffic Server like you are on you should be fine for about 5 Days if there wasnt anybody who wanted to harm you yet.
Tips:
  • Build in the mountains
It may be easier to get resources if you build somewhere in the Field, but you will get detected pretty easily and anybody who has 2 C4 will be looking for an easy loot Room.
  • Many Floors
Depending on where you build you should build as many as possible as long as you cant see your building from a distance. Its hard to find a good spot for foundations and stairs so you will be good if you build your Loot Room on the highest Floor.
  • Doors.Many of them
Well Doors will help you a lot. Metal Doors will require 2 More C4. That means that if they Destroyed one of your walls they will just get that Room and nothing else unless they are willing to spend a lot more C4.
  • Foundations with Pillars
If you place a lot of foundations with Pillars in the middle of it arround your house people cant build stairs and foundations so they can get your loot room on a High Floor.
Which means that,in combination with the doors and the floors, they will have to go for the doors. ALL of them
  • Spike Walls and Wooden gates
Place (If you have enough Space) Spike walls in a circle arround your House and seal the Circle up with a Wooden Gate. It will Slow Players down and Many Players dont want to waste their Time mining the Gate let alone waste C4 on it. Doing this will make it possible to build in a field.
If you follow these tips you should be fine.
Happy Hunting! :oni:
