on small parts, i like ion srms and shotguns. quite unsafe, but very good at 1v1. oh, and zapper pairs are pretty helpful if u can find them.
i think before the larger weapons become available. Like partikelhose.
shotguns are a thing i may try.
At that point I start using drops off enemies that are 3 part.
I tend to keep the sniper guns, since cannons are effectively a lot more powerful then laser.
1 slot Nose (3), Wings (5) : Omni lasers, Cannons (couple of each)
1 slot wing : mini gun def
1 slot engine : flak def.
1 slot engine : missle
2 slot engine : x2 missle
Cores (8, i think) : mainly watchspires (for turning and speed) & habitat domes(hp+turn&speed w/ 2 star)
Everything has been either a drop or filler purchases after doing some Arena matches and bandit hunting to get better trade deals.
spoilered I have still not reached the campaign progression to have my own starbase, but i have hit lvl 12. I'm slow at the start, farming Rez and Pilot / Faction Reputation.
I have been usinig this nub ship to ram... its fun., :)
You'll have better ramming success, however, with high-armor noses.
When designing, an important, often overlooked aspect (at least in posted designs) is effective combinations of range. This will multiply your effectiveness, IF carefully designed. For example, a Plasma/Particle Hose setup demands a large amount of engine boost, to quickly get you into (and out of) 350m, where your weapons mesh into a Roiling Cloud O' Doom™, and strong shields will be necessary, as well.
'Mid game' I call level 10-19 or so, when you've got medium but not large parts. For that, pulsers, fighters, and maybe ion shotguns.
Late game, pulsers, ion and attack bombers are good. Still trying to find good combinations, especially against strike craft. Explosive and corrosive warheads seem to do well if they connect with starbases.
And on the highest dificulty setting it's still so easy. Dont get me wrong, i do something wrong, and i get nuked, hardcore ; but that rarely happens. Ramming is still awesome.
The new Hanger system is a great touch, much better than before.
At lvl 15ish, and threat lvl 30, i can kill threat lvl 100+ bandits with a little work.

(anyone threat lvl 50-70 is toast). Can take on 2 ships, plus support craft, with alot of work. 3 ships, with support, not so good, uselly get hurt badly; but that will change with batter parts and more skills.
Add some Ion missiles if you want to cut them up a little quicker.
