The Forest or Rust?
Hi guys !! So I REALLY enjoy 7 Days to Die, and Ark. I am now on the hunt for another game like those 2, but a bit more 7 Days to Die-ish than Ark-ish. I don't really play them online though, what I do is start up a solo sandbox map, and just play it like a "survival" mode, start of by using my fists to gather resources and craft better stuff from there, all the while fending off zombies/dinos etc. I also usually start up a private server where me and my brother do the same, survive together and so forth.

So I'm looking for a game where I can do the whole solo/private server survival thing, so online play doesn't need to be good or balanced.

It seems like my 2 options are The Forest and Rust, they look the most appealing. Which of these 2 would you guys recommend? And why?

As long as I can play solo and with my brother on private servers I will almost already be sold on the game. What are your guys' opinions?

TIA

Subsistence is being developed by a single programmer and it is actually really good. Give it a look

No way.... Subsistence is one of the most terrible games I've ever played....

if you mainly want a single player survival game, try Subnautica.
Subnautica is absolutely amazing game. The polish and detail and depth of the game is astounding for a alpha game. You might stay away from the experimental branch for the moment though as there are alot of game breaking bugs. Stick with the main alpha versions for now.

Rust is absolute trash a PVP slaughterfest. Not suited for your style.

The Forest is a bit more casual, its got some cool pieces here and there, building is fun. It's atmospheric too, but there's still enemies to fight every once in while.

I'd reccomend The Forest. Its also got consistent updates with active developers giving updates
The forest has excellent graphics but not very great in terms of fun. you'll get bored after a few hours. my two cents

Let me guess, you got to close to a bear, it ate your ass, you died, lost 5 hours worth of material gathering because you kept it all on you, and couldn't find your death crate.

Cause I mean all your review of it says, is that you thought the controls were clunky, which most EA games have as a problem until they are ironed out anyway.

Being that you refunded it, means you didn't even play it for 2 hours, which as someone with more than 300 hours, I can tell you that means you didn't get very far in the game, likely because you died and lost your stuff, rage quit, and refunded the game lol.

@OP
If you want a good summary of Subsistence, do not listen to Lori. They couldn't even manage 2 hours of the game.

Instead just watch any of the current lets play videos of it on youtube. Several people are doing lets plays of it that are of current gameplay.

Neither... Take a brake from survival games and come back when you feel the urge. Both games are a step down from 7d2d imo. Same ol same ol
Skimmed the thread, and I don't own it, but: http://store.steampowered.com/app/250400/How_to_Survive/

Not sure how good it is, or State of Decay (don't own it!), but this thread made me think of them..

Also Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead, if you can handle ascii/tile graphics and keyboard controls.. Project Zomboid.. Hmm.. Zombasite has a demo if it looks interesting to you..

EDIT: Wasn't focusing on multiplayer with these suggestions, just good(ish?) zombie games :>

not a bad game think diablo but zombies. bases are a thing single multiplayer you can go to areas so think back in the day loading those areas that is not your area for bases(large forrested area were you make basses). you can revisit areas you have unlocked. again its like a top down at an angle but 3d. i really like this game tbh.

No way would I play rust solo. The survival is horrid, the anima combat is horrid. It's ♥♥♥♥. The forest has really good solo survival.

Clearly The Forest, if no fan of PvP, and Rust goes almost entirely for that.
The forest lacks a bit of diversion like for example it doesn't have electrics and stuff that comes with it like the machines and turrets in 7d2d. And the crafting is quite basic. Wish they would add a notch to that.
But regarding atmosphere it's way superior to 7d2d or ARK.

I'd say Rust if it weren't for the fact you just want to play solo. I mean, you could build a ton, but there isn't much else to do with a small group and no other players

rust has turned into a microtransaction cancer for people to buy guns and play deathmatch

the devs spend more time trying to figure out ways to milk their dwindling player base for pennies than they do adding to the game

HAHAHAHAHAAHAHA
You can NOT buy weapons, there are only skins to buy to use when you craft a gun.
Maybe you should own a game before you talk ♥♥♥♥ about it.
Space engineers has a similar construction & mining system to 7dtd, but without much opposition or survival things on vannila (you can get good mods for that though).

I'm on team SUBNAUTICA!!!! I LOOVVVEEE that game. You can build underwater, instead of zombies you got really scary sea creatures. The story line is really, really good. There are some shockers. It's an amazing game, one that has me in awe of it's beauty and terrified at times. You'll love it! :)
What has any of this thread got to do with 7D2D lol.
.
I might as well say " I realy enjoy 7days ,but i need a small break ,can you think of a country or city that would be good to visit in the world ". lol
Another title I didn't see in the many posts.. Novus Inceptio... it's interesting enough and only lacking zombies for the most part. Rust is only PvP BUT, there is a way to setup your own server and play it solo. Although, as people comment, I don't think it gives you near as much gameplay fun that way? I don't own it. Stranded Deep seems like good suggestion.. still have to get that one. Another I didn't see mentioined is "Out of Reach"

Edit: Savage Lands is pretty decent.. it still has quite of bit to be ironed out on it but, is enjoyable. As long as you don't mind playing EA games and realize they have quite a ways to go before being finished.. most all these suggestions are worth picking up if/when you can get them at low prices.

If all you want is, to build and explore, you might try Rising World. I have been sitting on this game since 2014, development has been slow, however one should take into account that it only has one person working on it. It's my understanding that he is very active in the community though.
