Is an update coming to consoles this year?
To the existing game on consoles? Or will console owners have to buy the game again or something if TFP repackages the game for a console release??

TFP unfortunately have no choice but to repackage the game for a console rerelease.

The publisher of the existing console version officially released the game and then went bankrupt, and both the Sony and Microsoft console store policies prohibit updates to games that would invalidate existing save files. Problem is, Every single major version between where the existing console version is and where the PC version is breaks save compatibility- Console is roughly at an equivalent of Alpha 15 with some Alpha 16 features, and PC is at Alpha 20 about to go on Alpha 21.

So it's just not possible to update the existing console version to the standard of the PC version. Rerelease is the only real option to get a console version in line with the PC version.

As to when it will come, there isn't a hard timeline. But the devs have stated they would like to get the console rerelease done in tandem with releasing A22 in the future.

April 2023

In the first Dev stream for Alpha 21, Rick and Joel showed A21 footage running on a PS5 to highlight the fact that they are developing the new console version concurrently with PC along with partner Titanium Games from Australia.

In a shocking announcement, Rick says that not only is the console development even with PC but that if all goes well their goal is to release PC Alpha 22 as the Version 1 release for console. Cross-platform play will come later.

So the old goal of waiting until PC goes gold before releasing console versions has been altered to getting 7 Days to Die out to consoles even before PC goes gold and to continue to finish up both PC and Console versions concurrently.

Rick also mentions that they are in talks with Microsoft and Sony to negotiate a discount program for existing owners of the original console game.

I would suggest cutting back on the cigarettes and bourbon if you're aging faster than real time like that.
