Darkness falls and follower Npc

I was watching a youtuber who was recruiting Npc's... He had a female farming and was setting up a guy as a guard. think you had to deed them and give them a refrigerator? anyways, I would love to have some NPC so they can defend my base a bit, so if you got any information please let me know and thank you in advance
