Another way, and one I utilize a good bit in DF is to dig down to bedrock and pick a direction. I almost always start my 'mine' inside the perimeter wall of my base, well protected. Dig straight down to bedrock, then choose a cardinal direction and start digging a tunnel. Eventually you'll hit iron, lead, whatever. Just don't do a bad and dig beneath your actual base. Bad things can happen if you do *from experience*. You won't find coal save in the burned forest areas, and you will find oil shale in the desert.
You will need to dig out into the wasteland to find titanium/uranium/plutonium and that's safest done at bedrock though not essential. You can do it by beating on surface rocks then digging beneath those that have what you're looking for. It can be a bit... hazardous, though.
Patience is the key. Keep digging and you'll find what you need. Screamers and their friends don't bother you at bedrock and, if you're wearing a rad suit, not even the radiation will touch you in the wasteland. Making yourself a rad mod for your helmet so you'll have a helmet light does help, though. Good luck!
