Night in DF is fairly deadly in early game. You'll get better, though, better armor and weapons, and be prepared after a time to venture out after dark. Meanwhile, consider mining, working on your base, sorting your equipment, crafting, etc. Most important of all READ EVERY ENTRY IN YOUR JOURNAL! It's all been updated to help you in the Darkness Falls mod. it's worth the time and effort to read.
You may wish to consider turned Blood Moon off for your first DF Playthrough. I personally prefer turning the roving hordes up all the way, have them show up every 6-15 hours, and just do without Blood Moon. Way more exciting, in my book, but everyone plays a bit differently. You'll find your way.
Just in case you didn't notice - scrap unneeded schematics and books into Skill Notes, those are the base resource to craft your own Class Book. Don't be afraid to spend a skill point "wastefully" since you can craft +1 Skill Point books for 60 Skill Notes (if you use the Writing Desk). Whenever I pass the old (A18) Crack-a-Book factory I feel like it's a free 5 Skill Points since I can usually leave with 300 Skill Notes.
That aside, you can play DFalls without choosing a Class at all. The first two tabs (first is Action Skills, second is non-action generic skills like Concrete, Work Stations, Basic Farming) are enough (barely). When you find a specific skill book (e.g. Workstations, Basic Farming, Chem Station schematic) it usually applies to the non-action generic skill tab. In a few cases those books apply to classes as well (every point in Forge Ahead (either that you spent or book-given) will be refunded when you unlock the Labourer class (since these will have to again be spent in his skills, which do more than just unlock a workstation), while every point in the generic Vehicles perk is also applied towards the Mechanic's Vehicles skill).
