After you read the Forge Ahead book or choose to put one point into Forge Ahead, anyone can make a forge and that's all you need to make jars. A bit of sand, some clay etc, and you have endless jars. Also, dig a 3x3x2 deep well, dig the center block one deeper and put a Rain Catcher barrel down in that center hole. Soon, it will fill with water and you'll have an endless supply. You can plant your early farm around that little well using a hoe and whatever seeds you find out in the world. You've got this!
A simple POI for animals could be the Red Rooster, it has several Chickens, but also Zombies. Another less savoury option is to pay attention to the eyes of wolf-looking dogs you come across (very big ones are definitely Dire Wolves, which you do not investigate), if their eyes are not glowing then they are not hostile (they'll run up to you, probably hoping for belly rubs or word about their misplaced Owner-Friend); what you do with them is up to you, but could in some cases be construed as a mercy.
