Installs and starts the mods for you and you keep the original install.
OP, you didn't say what "didn't work" means. Does it run at all?
My suggestions: follow the authors guide on how to install the mod
https://youtu.be/3ku2GZr1x2Y
If that doesn't work, try cleaning out the old data which may be conflicting and install again.

The mod launcher also leaves your steam vanilla copy alone and makes no changes to it.
As does the manual installation in the video above. If you follow the discord or mod topic on the official forum, for DF or Undead Legacy, over and over again you have people with problems installing the mod. And over and over again the problem comes from using the mod launcher.
I think the mod launcher is a good idea if you want to try out different mods, like one stop shopping. But if something doesn't work, go and bother the mod launcher author, not the modder.
One could always try the hard (or in this case recommended) way, if a mod launcher fails and causes any trouble.
To this point, I'd always suggest to try the easy way first. And it actually works fine each time for my buddys and myself so...
