Mining in darkness falls
I know it is a bit different in DF. When you mine a rock does it have more of it under it like in vanilla or when you done with the rock you need to find another one?

Pretty sure that is still the case that ore veins are below the surface nodes.

And you get into the high end stuff in wastelands (plutonium, titanium, etc.)

I've been pretty fortunate with the a19 iteration of DF when it comes to mining. I made a single block shaft down 35 blocks from inside my trader/home (super reinforced, by the way) and hit my first iron vein. A few side paths from there netted pretty much all I needed until time for the really rare stuff. The point is.. get deep and explore. It's much the same as vanilla in that regard.

Check your map for a smallish area of wasteland if you're after Titanium/Plutonium/Uranium. The number 2 of each map size where you have large green in the middle and other biomes at the outer edges don't have this but, the number 1 map of each size have the compo pack for POIs and the biomes are scattered in such a way that you probably will find a small patch of wasteland somewhere. That's where you should do your mining... away from larger patches where demon gates will spawn on your head, though, they can still spawn in. It's just that you're surrounded by other biomes, so you can make a run for it and, hopefully, not get overwhelmed. Hopefully.
