Two years ago there were jars. But things have changed and jars are gone now. These days, you cannot collect murky water from a water source now (not from a lake or water you moved in a bucket) as far as I know.

To answer the subject, you get murky water by looting now.

Edit: can't believe I forgot dew collectors

Or you build dew collectors, which will slowly generate murky water. There are additional items you can add to a dew collector to speed up the water accumulation rate, and then finally a filter that produces clean drinking water instead of murky.

Dew collectors require 100 scrap plastic, so start looting all those mini-blinds as soon as you can, and other sources of plastic.
so what's the point of bucket !?!?!?

to make a moat, to make a water feature, to place a water source at your base to drink from it directly with your hands (with the water filter helmet mod there is no ill effects), many reasons.

allright , still sounds stupid

If you have a water filter mod, you can actually just drink out of that water you place with the buckets.
It's an infinite supply of water wherever you want. Or you could drink without the mod and get dysentery. Lol

Otherwise, you can place water wherever you want just for fun, or for making a pool or something.

The removal of jars has been the most controversial change in the last 10 years

jars still exists in the items xml and commented out but they are missing their function to pick water from source and also the icon is not linked anymore so its invisible item in inventory and not working (tested this yesterday). Totally ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and senseless and TFP is not reacting to it. Lack of communication with the community like most developers they only see money rolling thats it.

You give up way too easy, what a shame.

If there's a next time, then bring a bucket of water with you so you can pour it out (makes 4 blocks of water) fill it (takes 3 blocks of water) and drink as much as you like from the remaining water block. As mentioned above, you can drink from a water block -- select an open slot on your toolbelt (i.e. use your hands) and face the water for a couple seconds ("Press E to Drink" will appear). You'll lose 5 HP per drink, but gain 10 Water. Lots of ways to deal with the damage or the chance of Dysentery, but if you do get Dysentery then you can ignore it (it does nearly nothing -- when the icon gurgles you'll lose 3 Food and 8 Water). Dysentery is never fatal, but having low Stamina Regen due to low Water is dangerous and annoying.

Since you haven't played in a while, you might not know that having zero Food or zero Water isn't fatal anymore, you just lose health slowly (might be 40 per day), but at zero Water your Stamina doesn't regen at all (you can still walk, sneak, loot, shoot, drive, so it's mostly just annoying to have to walk everywhere).
the dew collector gives you 3 glass of murky water ! i also bought gatherer which increase the rate of dew collection
