You'll need a sun source not a light source, to let you plants grow, and each "square" of sun light, let grow plants from a 6x6 squares radius, so, knowing this, if you want an efficient farm inside your house or underground, make an square hole to let sun go in (no matter how much depth you want it or in surface), and put a 6x6 farm plots (like the diamond shape, but 360º).
Things you must know:
Check how many squares the plants will grow up, not the same a potato, a coffee plant or a yuca plant, each plant will grow to different squares up (1,2 and 3).
Careful if you build inside your base, plants fully grown adds extra weight, and can collapse your base without reason.
Each sun square is for 6x6 square radius, if you wont respect this, outside plants wont grow, so, if the idea is to make a big farm think how many sun squares you'll need.
And if you want an underground farm, from each sun square at the surface, build an small tower of blocks around it, why? to not let zombies enter your farm.
