New profile - playable?
I host a private server for friends. I have a character/profile I use. I recently made a new profile to play on the same server, possibly to replace the first character.

I discovered today I cannot log into the new character/profile even though it's selected. I automatically log into the old one every time.

Question: Can I .bak or delete the old one or will it wreck the server? If so, where do I go to save the character file?

I wouldn't think it would wreck the server. But you might want to look into the "persistent profile" checkbox that exists when logging into a server. Some people report better results having toggled it.

I'll give that a try right now. Thanks.

From the 10.4 hotfix patch notes:

• PersistentPlayerProfiles changed to default to false for dedicated servers. Persistent player profiles: TRUE means that when you log into a server for the first time, whatever character you are playing as (a big black woman with long hair) will always be what you look like, even if you change it to another profile (to a bald, fat white guy). FALSE means that you will change looks depending on what your current character looks like each time you log in.

Well that turned out...not as I expected. My man toon turned into a girl with a man's name. Wearing his clothes, everything he had on. Even in the old base.

I was hoping for a diff toon to start semi-fresh with. Might see if I can delete both toons & start over completely. :sadpanda:

Thanks though, Jᴧgᴧ.

Ahh I see. It was my understanding it'd let us start fresh with a new toon. Not just replace our skin. Shame. :/

Did you remember to select the profile you want to use from the Options/Profiles area, and click Ok?

I rarely do MP, and even less profile editing. You may have to experiment some. :gopher:

Yes I did. It's just a new skin, basically.

I made a back-up of my server. I'm going to empty my toon's stuff in a chest & delete both characters then try to restart with a new toon. Hopefully...that doesn't turn out badly.

Obligatory: "If I'm not back in 20 mins, the zombies have eaten my new character."

I must be missing something here...

I just made a brand new toon under a diff profile name but it's still using the old one. Which also happens to be called 'Brezlon'. Not sure what to do here.

I just tested by creating a new char profile (made a good looking redneck this time), and made sure it was selected when hitting Ok. I then went to "continue game", disabled persistent profiles, and logged in. I checked the character page, and sure enough there was my dashing redneck staring back at me.

Seems to work, unless there's a bug on your end.

Are you an actual new character? Like starting out fresh with a new name? Are you hosting a server like me or is it single play?

The new profile I made is only a re-skin of my old one. Brand new & she's already level 12 with 200 wellness. I was going to fly out into the wilderness in some random direction to do a proper 'restart' with her, but I noticed she had the same name too.

I've a feeling there's more that I'm missing. Are our characters tied to our Steam ID names? If so, that's troubling. Would make it challenging for people who roleplay to restart or RP multiple characters over a short time. Not to mention, privacy issues - say a famous LPer wants to try a public server. They can't go incognito.

If the Steam ID bit is what's happening, maybe masking the # to only server admins, with a public pseudonym in game would be a better way to go. Then it can be changed at a whim, but the Steam ID can still be subject to white/blacklist if that's what an admin needs.

I'm loading my current 10.4 game in-progress, which was started and played with a separate profile. I created the new character profile and was able to play the same game with the same gear and inventory, with the new profile showing up in the character screen.

I think you only get the one character (inventory/gear) per server/game from what I'm seeing. You can change your look with a new profile, but retain all the same stuff.

Yeah so that's it then. I was hoping it wouldn't be that way. Then I could play one character with someone, and another one with someone else. That way one doesn't feel left behind.

Shame we can't change our names either. Doesn't seem like that's going to fly well at release, esp since it's tied to our Steam account name.

Character profiles are pretty new, as is the character editor. I never make assumptions when parts of the game are still so raw. Anything (and possibly everything) can change, there's lots of time left.

For sure.

I should add a disclamer at every post I make, "For now...." and "...while we're in Alpha." ;)
