There will have been people playing experimental builds of alpha 2.0 for quite some time now, my guess would be a few months. Although probably mostly in a very boring, work not play kind of way. Formal playtesting is not really like playing. It's work and generally rather dull and repetitive. But my guess is that the devs have done some actual playing, informal playtesting. Maybe a few people close to the devs who they trust.
But not public release, not even as a closed beta by invitation only.
The actual alpha 2.0 version is a while away yet. There will be an unstable experimental build released first, for wider informal playtesting. That's what will be listed as a beta in Steam, whenever it happens.
