EDIT Now that seven mentioned it I think topsoil did turn into snow in winter biome, not 100% sure though.
Nice info. Another feature I didn't know about after 4k+ hours in the game.
And a curse for terraformers unless there's a mod.
Good luck with keeping the snow pristine. Love starting in the snow biome, but building on it is a pain. I just build on roads, etc, so I don't have to worry about SI unless it's a horde fighter.
I miss the old system a bit, where you could make specific terrain blocks rather than a magic topsoil block that always matches the terrain. I spent quite a while in one playthrough digging up part of a different biome (the old burnt forest IIRC, before it was removed before being reinstated later) and replacing it with forest terrain blocks. Regreening!
Structural integrity (the SI that Trooper Bri referred to). It affects the stability of stuff you build. Snow has a very low value and is very easily destroyed, so you can end up in a situation where part of your base is requiring a particular snow block and will collapse if that block is destroyed. Or if you upgrade a block (which will usually make it heavier).
When I build in the snow biome, I dig away all the snow in the area I'm building on so I can build on dirt. Although I haven't built in the snow biome for some time now.
In any biome I will dig down to solid rock and put in concrete piers to support the building.
