Things falling apart when I mine
I have created a base, stand alone, its 2 story, and I have extensive mines underneath. I came up to my building, to the 2 story, and my roof had caved in and the walk way that I had built , it was elevated, had some blocks that were missing as well?

I have tried put the blocks back, but to on avail.

I want to know if my mines were the issue or something else. I have my mines 20 blocks deep, and I take them to 5 block before I start another one.

the problem comes with the stability of dirt, which is poor, and sand, which is the weakest. tunneling with stone around you horizontally and vertically is safe and you can make massive underground rooms. But any sand and dirt supporting whatever is above is a big no.

Digging under anything can be risky if you don't know how to manipulate the SI. Structural Integrity (SI) is infinite when measured from bedrock to the block being measured, but Any gap in the intervening space, be it in dirt, stone, or manmade material(EG: a room you made) means structural integrity begins calculating from that point. It is fully possible to make tunnels and hollow out large rooms if you do it right with the right materials and supports- But it's also very easy to cause collapses on the surface if you're not being careful enough.

Certain materials definitely support less horizontally than others though- Stone is pretty high, dirt is pretty low, Sand is worthless and can barely support A block, let alone multiple.

I once made a 30x30 room with stone around me underneath a mountain. that was with no supports or any other materials either just for the sake of testing the SI. So that is why i stand by my position that stone tunnels are the best.

i did make tunnels in dirt level however with rooms supported with wood ceilings only a handful of blocks between the pillars, and it all fell down because of the dirt not the pillars, which were left standing. So the difference is pretty extreme as well.

Alright, I figured it out. I had to do extensive mine construction, I built walls.

I watched that video you posted , with the mine collapsed, it was so funny!
